Title: Ebay seller sent me a dell quietkey instead of a at102w
Post by: Aran.E99 on Tue, 26 July 2016, 06:07:01
just waited about 2 weeks for my parcel if not longer (plus 1 week for the auction to end). just opened it to find a bad condition dell quietkey. i have messaged the seller and also saved the auction page so that if he denies the accusations i can open a dispute.

Sometimes things are too good to be true. i really hope this was an honest mistake because stuff like this is what makes me hate people more and more every day

The original picture looks like it's in even worse condition. Always try to avoid buying dirty Alps boards unless you're planning to just desolder all the switches and throw them away ;) .

It's sad everyone can't be a decent person. In the keyboard community I have found pretty good people though at least here at Geekhack.

yeah, i agree. its odd as the seller seemed really nice and helpful and was adamant that my keyboard would be safe etc but there are some great sellers I've had in the past. i am still waiting for a reply.

I had to look it over several times before I noticed the case of the at102w has a sort of pen-notch on top. Could be a case of mistaking one board for another.

The person may have just gotten confused, especially if they don't know the difference. They almost look the same, but you can tell the seller that the one you were purchasing has a bigger logo and, as JaccoW said, the pen notch. This way you can go with that if they don't think there's a difference with the switches.

Bummer!  I just came back from visiting my parents (other side of the country).  They still have the QuietKey that came with the old Dimension P100.  I was tempted to bring it back with me, but I already have 2 WYSE keyboards (black) from work that I don't use.

Hope they get you the AT102W that you paid for!  I just installed a detachable (coiled) micro usb cable on my AT101W.

The case on a Bigfoot is WAY bigger than that of a QuietKey, and it's a totally different shape. If it was a mistake it was a pretty silly one :p .

The listing was very specific about a part number that was clearly different.

If he had actually looked at the 2 models side-by-side, the AT102W is considerably larger (and heavier).

i do think it was an honest mistake, the same seller also had a joblot of like 10 dell keyboards (8 quietkeys and 2 at102s) and he must of got confused. i'm still waiting to find out if he did it by accident, but seriously, when i saw and felt the parcel i knew it was wrong so i cant understand how he didnt notice if i knew by the packaging...

The seller got confused - I'm sure it was an honest mistake. Keep the quiet key and be (very) happy, and then offer a bit more money for the other keyboard.

I agree with the OP that these things do happen.

Some sellers who know nothing about keyboards may take a photo of a Dell AT-102 as a stock and send out a random keyboard with a Dell logo on it; these sellers don't realize that there's a difference between a QuietKey and the AT-102.

yeah, it was a mistake, he told me he didn't know there was a difference between a quietkey and an at102w so he is sending me the at102w. faith in humanity restored.

but yeah, there are lots of people who list things wrongly and don't realize such as people selling cheap rubber domes and listing them as mechanical for phenomenal prices. i'd hate to break their hearts and tell them xD

Have any more pics of the quiet key? If its one of the earlier versions that uses NMB dome with sliders it's actually quite competant as far as rubber domes go.

its not using sliders sadly. i already checked to see if the caps were of any value but sadly its just a run-of-the-mill cheap quietkey

I don't think ANY QuietKey had caps worth anything. The NMB mount is proprietary and only used on these dome with slider switches, and the others are rubber dome mount. Besides, they're all lasered ABS, not a huge interest for them generally. Even lasered PBT caps don't get much attention.

I'm not surprised he didn't know the difference, but it's still a silly mistake :p . Especially because he listed the part numbers so specifically.

yeah, i guessed that the caps are generally specific to its mount. only thing im worried about is that he swapped the quietkey from a joblot with the at102w and has sold the keyboard i purchased. i'm still waiting to see if he has it...

Doubt you can get much worse than the one you actually ordered xD .

i don't know, i ordered one about a month ago and it was very clean but the switches were full of dirt. i guess its hit and miss with alps switches. hopefully this is more externally dirty but the switches will need a clean.

i picked up an earlier quietkey for £1 a few weeks back but it took a week to clean it and de-yellow it. really nice feel to it.

earlier quietkey

earlier. that's the keyword there. mine feels like a cheap rubber dome you can get from wilkos for a fiver. either way, 1 quid isn't bad, i'm guessing you got it at a recycling center or something.

I ordered an AEKII a while back and got an AppleDesign Keyboard instead.

Fortunately, the seller refunded my money when I complained, and didn't make me return the old keyboard. Now I have an old rubber dome Apple Keyboard floating around, and don't have a use for it.

I ordered an AEKII a while back and got an AppleDesign Keyboard instead.

In my experience, the Design keyboards with detachable cables had nice Alps-mount caps, while the ones with attached cables did not.

Also, the "early" Quietkeys from Thailand or Malaysia or wherever are much nicer than the later ones from China.
Look to see whether the actual domes are colorful inserts rather than integrally molded with the base sheet.

mine is made in china and has the clear domes.

This was the lousy type. I still have it in my closet, and don't want to throw it away, but can't think of a use for it.

Hmm, don't some Appledesign boards have the same Alps mount dye-sub PBT the AEK had?

Yes, they're worth scavenging.

Buying boards off eBay always sketches me out for some reason.

i've bought maybe 10 now and i can say this is the first time this has happened with a keyboard. normally sellers don't want to get shut down and in this case he was very helpful and i finally got it. i wouldn't say ebay is all that bad but don't forget caveat emptor.

I don't think that Ebay scammers would really make a huge effort to scam with keyboards. It's more of something I'd expect with something like iPhones or big name brand products. Plus Ebay is super anal about scams and they will side with the buy 99% of the time, to the point its actually easier for the buyer to scam the seller than the other way around.

I've bought two boards off Ebay, a FK 2001 and my Model M and I didn't have any issues with either of them.

I have been buying and selling on ebay for nearly 2 decades and generally found that 5% of transactions are bad, for whatever reasons.

In recent months I have had 3-4 "bad" sales where buyers made stupid complaints about perfectly good items, but I try to err on the side of complete descriptions and disclosure.

That said, just recently I made a bad call on a small transaction with a Geekhacker and I will owe him a refund.

**** happens, but ebay's feedback system, for all its faults (eliminating the option of leaving feedback on bad buyers?) is a workable solution.

yeah, ebay's policies have changed, most likely because of my dad after he got scammed out of £400 worth of vintage pokemon cards. the seller denied that they received it but we know they did. my dad must have been talking with ebay support for about 2 weeks xD

now, ebay will not let that happen and if you have proof you will get excellent support.

and like i said, this was due to a very inexperienced seller who has now been educated by me on the differences in keyboards.

oh and this is aimed at the very pessimistic chyros: the black alps actually feel decent (compared to other boards i have). just goes to show that not all keyboards have to face the wrath of dirt :p

I still am peeved they removed the ability to leave feedback for buyers.
