I've thought about this a ton (I'm in education) because we say all the damn time "reach students' full potential". And you know what, I have no ****ing clue what that actually means. Like, is there some magical cognitive wall that exists that people can't break through? Because if there is, no one has been able to establish its existence. Every measurement tool we have can be "gamed" which is to say that you can always improve your ability in anything provided you're willing and able to put the right kind of work in. And at the same time, I'm not at all sure there's anything that I could personally do have mastery of some things, like the application of representation theory and lie algebras to particle physics for example. So maybe there is a wall. Who knows. I'm kind of tired of all of it tbh.
And the internet sure as hell isn't the problem.

Yes. I could have been a professional ballerina or cake decorator or cabbage farmer or undertaker or apothecary, but BAM, the internet happened, and now I have a closet full of ancient keyboards, no room left for tutus.
On the flip side, the internet is also a gushing fount of mathematics papers, so now I know a whole lot more about hexagons than I ever would have known in a past era. So there’s that.
For instance, I might have never considered the easiest way to compute the proportions of a 15°–85°–90° triangle:

Depends on how thorough people are with running a trace route. NSA/FBI/CIA can trace route all day long idgaf -- I'm broke but I have some intellectual property that I would like to keep private so sometimes I worry about that. Also, online college would be a total nightmare if someone was remoting in and messing around with my notes/papers/calendar/emails.
As far as people just venting their frustrations through trolling? Nah. If they have some imagination it can get interesting but most trolling lacks imagination so /shrug

I like to stay ontopic as much as possible while writing in offtopic...but going offtopic real quick, I tried to make Pho last week...I followed some video on Youtube and it came out pretty horrible....cheaper to just go buy a bowl, way less work too..
If you're consistently eating ramen packets every day, that can't be good for you, Mr. Tp.

The internet gave me porn, access to recipes i would otherwise never have tried, places to find elusive parts/hobbies, friends, dates, one night stands, booze i would never find locally, ugh...the list is enormous...
If anything, the internet has complemented my life.

(Good) ramen is the same, the success lies in the soup base. While I am guilty of enjoying an occasional bowl of salt-inflicted Top Ramen when the wifey isn't home, few things beat a properly prepared tonkotsu broth.

Instant ramen is so satiating and spot-hitting, that at times I wonder if The Majority of the Culinary arts is a waste of time..
Something so simple, fried dough, msg, water.. rivals the best of the best..
I've eating some very complicated stuff, some very expensive stuff.. Yet, Ramen, it gives you that same high level of gratification in 5 minutes...

It certainly doesn't now. All my work is on the internet and I've been given the opportunity to juggle two different engineering jobs in different offices and/or work from home because everything can be done remotely. I've got a life that's flexible where I can look after my son while I work if needs be. I can keep track of my friends and any good gigs that are going on despite living 20 minutes from the city and not being out very much at all.
I wasted an absolutely inordinate amount of time on the internet from 18 to 30. In retrospect it feels like if I'd had less distraction I'd probably have spent more time drinking or being bored instead. I'd probably have watched a lot more television. At least on the internet I got to develop my own interests.
I found motivation in a good relationship, starting a family and finding a career rather than a job. I've cut myself off from internet, drink and other distractions in the past and it definitely helped more than it hurt though. It just didn't really carry though to something more because I'm more interested in doing my best when I'm responsible for other people.

I would say the internet provides me with access to all the knowledge I really want to learn, to the point that I avoid doing what I'm supposed to be doing. It is so vast that its a huge distraction. I also find that a lot of the time people (myself included) spend so much time researching and talking about doing something online and never actually go do it.
