Title: Post Your Life Accomplishments!
Post by: thatsmrdoctortoyou on Thu, 04 August 2016, 23:58:15
I was thinking this evening, a topic regarding recent accomplishments would be a good way of positively reinforcing hard work and dedication. Yes this thread is quite similar to "What makes you happy," but can also be a location to discuss what you are working toward in your personal/professional lives. Accomplishments should include anything and everything that make you feel warm/fuzzy about the hard work you put in each day.

I'll start us off because today was a good day  :thumb:

1. Made weight today, losing a total of 21lbs in just over a 2 months.
2. Hit 100wpm for the second time in my life  :))
3. Passed my first class of medical school with honors  ;D

Alright now lets hear those accomplishments!

Also, please let me know if there is already a thread for this already   ;)

but they said, real live has just begun... so yeah. still a long way to go to my actual 'life accomplishments', i guess.

Good topic. I have a successful startup business, working for myself as a photographer.  Also, today I finally secured a deal on a used car for something that was very hard to find.  I took two years first searching for a nice Honda (just wasn't happening) and gave up recently to find a TDI Jetta.  Today I found out that the Unicorn of a car people search for is agreeably mine and I pick her up Tuesday.  I wasn't even hoping for what I found, it's that good.

All the cool **** I've done was before turning into an adult, everything post adulthood has been nothing but disappointment.

Climbed Mt. Blanc in France(and almost died falling off an unstable glacial overhang) and the Giza Pyramids in Egypt. Drove the Khardung La in India. Those are the most exciting things, all before 16. My adult life sucks and I'm constantly board with it.

That's a tough one. My wife and I have had our share of joy and hard times and it's hard to know which one drew us closer together. Probably both. Like many, we discovered each others less desirable qualities after we said "I do". It's then that you really decide how committed you are to your vows. We thought it was worth it.

I am concerned with the status of marriage today; so many bad examples that young people are afraid to commit. So much instant gratification that there's an unfamiliarity with enduring. People willing to take the plunge without realizing that when they hit the water they will have to exercise their muscles and swim.

I don't mean this as an indictment on today's young people. On the contrary, I've seen excellent examples of very successful young marriages. My concerns have more to do with the societal shift in attitudes towards marriage and the lack of good examples.

I guess I gave you more observations and opinions than advice. I guess I don't have much to give but thanks for asking.

I don't think it's marriage that's the problem..

It's because EVERYONE goes into it, without realizing what it is, or what it takes, because it's an assumed course of action. So people do it whether or not they have the requisites, be it mental or material.

The purpose of marriage really should be evaluated more carefully prior to taking that dive, because marriage and procreation is no longer a requirement for our species..

It took a while, but I got a college degree in Computer Science in 2007.
Paid off the last of my student loan last year.

Both were very much helped by college tuition being free over here... If I had lived in the US for instance, there would have been no way I would have been able to go to college.

If you've been together a while marriage doesn't change your life too much.
Having kids, however, changes everything. EVERYTHING.

I think that is just natural anxiety, just like people get right before the wedding.
If they have been been engaged for a few months already - which they should have - then they should already have thought things through.

Well I managed to wake up before noon this week, so that's something.
Congratulations! That is something I have to learn. (posting this at 4:05 in the morning local time because I can't sleep ...)

I've never been married, and I have been alive for a shorter period than kurplops marriage.  But what I have observed among my peers is that a lot of young people seem to dive into marriage based on feelings and what their social group expects of them.  The realization of how much work is involved to maintain a good marriage is not accounted for until issues begin to crop up.

Of course, that is a generalization based on limited observation and experience, but when I hear people discuss their marriage problems, my understanding in many cases is that there is a misestimation of the amount of work that would be required for the routine  and not-so-picture-perfect parts of adult life and relationships.

Hmmm... Couple of factors to consider...

Evolution (everything that ever was humanity, depended upon women saying YES to kids), no pressure

Education level (the more educated the mother, the higher the household income, simply having more MONEY at hand, creates the Condition which increase the POSSIBILITY of having children, (because you can afford to, it doesn't seem so stressful (until you do have them, then it's all stress all the time forever))

So not much you can do about evolution,    but if you manage to keep her from getting a masters/doctorate,   then the odds of remaining childless increases..

That is true of 3+ children

but it is less likely of 2 and fewer as education attainment is higher..
