<Introduction>
Posting this on behalf of my friend: https://www.reddit.com/user/MDDDIY or Trayke here at GH. Some of you may be familiar with his work as a wristrest maker, but for those who aren't, Trayke specializes in crafting custom, exotic wood wristrests. He's helped numerous users put the finishing touch on their battlestations, with the benefit of adding a bit of ergonomic comfort as well. For those of us who eye-twitch when there is overhang or undercut on the rest, this buy will allow fully custom sizing to fit your exact needs. Six standard sizes will be offered modeled after common form factors:
60%: Pok3r - 11.5"
75%: Octagon V2 - 12 7/16"
TKL: LZ-SE - 14”
96-Key: Lightsaver V2 - 14 5/8”
HHKB: 11.5"
Fullsize: 17 1/4"
Other sizes or boards: Custom sizing will be accepted via an entry in the form
<The Wood>
To keep this buy unique and interesting, the wood utilized will not be available outside of this buy. We discussed ideas on various woods to use, and finalized the selection when Trayke found a source on a species called sunken "Honduran Mahogany" (aka "Genuine Mahogany"). This wood has a unique history, and comes from an odd place: the bottom of a river. These pieces were harvested from virgin, old-growth forests over 100 years ago when Belize was a British colony. To transport the logs back to Britain, loggers floated them down jungle rivers to Caribbean ports, destined for the long Atlantic crossing. However, not all logs reached their destination, some were so old, and thus dense, that they actually sank before even reaching the Caribbean.
Now, over a hundred years later, they’re seeing the light of day again as companies seek to float these old logs back to the surface. These old-growth Mahogany logs are quite rare; it is no exaggeration to say the total age from seedling to wristrest is no less than 300 years. Even commercially farmed mahogany needs 100-150 years just to reach minimum harvestable thickness. These sunken mahogany logs are even older as they managed to sink during transport. Present overlogging has pressured most commercial stocks of Honduran Mahogany to be cut prior to optimal graining; early cutting means the wood does not get a chance to gain some of the characteristics that make Honduran Mahogany so desirable.
Not so with this sunken lumber. The tight figured graining gives off a "chatoyancy effect", appearing 3D and changing color depending on viewing color. The colors of this unique lumber range from pale pinkish brown to darker reddish brown. Visually the wood is stunning, examples below are some raw pieces, the texture and grain density will be more apparent post-finishing:

<Specifications>
Each wristrest is handmade with care in Tennessee, USA. The rest will be milled and cut to the length you specify in the order form. The width and thickness will be 3 ½” x ⅝”. A small full-thickness palm rest area tapers following an 8 degree bevel down to ¼” as seen in this example photo.
After each rest is milled, the edges are hand planed and then given a ¼” round over. Following, the piece is sanded with 220 grit sandpaper before going through a finishing process to protect each piece from hand oils. Each rest comes with 4 small rubber bumpons bringing the rest to its full height of ¾”. A high-gloss finish is applied to allow the full character of the wood to express itself. The end result is sleek, yet durable against invasive hand oils. See below pics for an example of the finish:

<Order Notes>
This GB will run with a MOQ of 15 rests, and a maximum of 30 rests. Orders past 30 will be put on a waiting list, and will be fulfilled depending on the length of wood left over. Fulfillment will be FIFO.

Hi limitz. what is the shipping cost to Indonesia? Can it be made in fullsize?
It can be made in fullsize, I've updated the thread and added that as a standard size, will get a dimension for it tomorrow.
Will get back to you on the shipping cost.
-
Hi limitz. what is the shipping cost to Indonesia? Can it be made in fullsize?
I sent you a Private Message to get your address for a shipping quote.
The rest can be made any size you'd like. For Full Size in the past I've used 17 1/4" (438mm).

Man those are nice, Too bad i just cant quite afford it atm.

You mention "a high gloss finish is applied". Is this a polyurethane finish, or oil and wax, or...?

The finish I use depends entirely on the species of wood. In this case, it's probably going to be a combination of finishes. I say probably because until I actually get the lumber milled/sanded and start testing different methods, I won't know which will bring out the grain. Here's how I'm expecting it to go...
1) Boiled Linseed Oil or Dewaxed Shellac. Whichever makes the grain and chatoyancy stand out more.
2) Semi-Gloss Poly. Depending on whether I go with Shellac or BLO it may be oil based urethane or waterborne acrylic.
3) Turtle Wax automotive rubbing compound buffed out to a mid-to-high gloss shine. I do this because high gloss is too glossy and semi isn't glossy enough so I compromise.
Let me know if you have any other questions.

Cool, thanks for responding. I sometimes worry about poly finishes on really nice wood because I like the *idea* of repair and restoration without having to sand off the entire finish, but I also recognize there's real longevity concerns with something that will be handled to such and extent.

It's all a balancing act. For instance, I wouldn't use just shellac because I know how often I've spilled beer near my keyboard and alcohol will dissolve a shellac finish easily. Where as wax is good, but doesn't offer a lot of physical protection. I find that something to really accentuate the look is important, but so is protection so you don't have to worry about accidentally damaging it.

Honduran Mahogany is the holy grail of tone woods for vintage Les Paul. Can't believe there's a chance I could feel the unique texture while typing.
Definitely I'm in! :-*

The person I'm buying the wood from does quite a bit of business in tonal woods. He wouldn't tell me whether Les Paul was a customer or not, but I got the feeling the feeling some big names were buying it.

that wood looks incredible..

These look really nice. I would jump on one but unfortunately my next board needs something a little more...custom.

I can do custom...within reason ;)

I love the live-edge, the grain, and the color; these are really very beautiful. These should be in Sharper Image.

Hi limitz. what is the shipping cost to Indonesia? Can it be made in fullsize?
I went through PM to get your specific address, but wanted to let anyone that was interested know the shipping was still $22.50.
-
I'm in. Also, there are some great blog posts and stuff about the origins about these logs. Good reading!
-
this wood has some crazy backstory, if anyone else wants to find out more you actually have to search for "honduran mahogany sinker logs"
-
Side question: I've been gluing RE magnets (http://www.dx.com/p/5-1-5mm-cylindrical-ndfeb-magnet-silver-80pcs-426248) to both keyboards and my one 60% wrist rest so they don't keep sliding away from each other.
Would it be possible to make small holes in the wood to hide them? 2x1.5mm thick, so 3mm deep and 5mm diameter I suppose.
Would that be hard, or is that something I can do to my existing wrist rest as well?
-
This is an interesting idea. I could put the holes in the side of the rest, but it would take some coordination with you to make sure everything lines up.
-
Oh, I would just use the placement of those holes as the template for the placement of all the magnets in the future :)
But they would have to be where the 60% keyboard would be, so something like 5 and 25cm from the left edge of the rest - so I can use them for all keyboard sizes.
-
If you can do it, just add a fee to my paypal invoice :) I think I put my GH username on the order.
-
I'm in. Excited to see how these turn out!
Are you actively invoicing as you receive orders now that MOQ is hit?
-
Answered in the 2nd post. Invoicing will start next week.
EDIT: All 22 existing orders have been invoiced. New orders will be invoiced as they come in.
-
Thanks for using BCC in the email.
Those who know will nod. Those who don't should look it up ;)
-
paid! are you shipping them as you finish them?
-
Paid!
-
I actively started working on the rests last night. The wood is quite beautiful. I can't wait to see it with some finish on it.
-
I had this lovely daydream yesterday about having a desk plate made of this material. Then I remembered I'm in Europe, and the shipping alone would probably bankrupt a small bank.
-
I think you have the wong idea of shipping costs. I once got a Weber Summit S-670 shipped from the US BY PLANE for 450US$. Sea freight would have been around 200US$. If you really want it, go get it.
-

I'll admit, I'm not sure what a Desk Plate is.
That being said, I am actively connected to the woodworking community with some international connections. I can reach out if you're truly interested.

Desktop, I guess. English is not my first language. We call it a desk plate in norwegian. A desk consists of a plate and legs. :)
But no, I can't afford it right now anyway.

Cool, submitted one.

Mmm that's some good wood.

Submitted and paid... can't wait!

Paid.
-
Thanks, everyone! I think at this point almost everyone has paid up. I spent most of the night in the shop last night and made considerable progress on the first batch of rests.
I took a test piece through the entire sanding process to test out the finish and this wood looks absolutely gorgeous . Once I'm comfortable I may post a picture.
There are still 5 more slots in the group buy and I may have enough wood for some extras if anyone is still considering it. And if you're holding off to see what they'll look like, well, shoot me a PM!
-
I am considering adding a 60% actually... With the modification we talked about :)
Just send me a new invoice for the difference, and I'll stop considering it ;)
-
The first 10 rests have been been completed and begun the finishing process (the long part). ETA for first batch to ship is end of next week.

#30 has been hit! Any further orders will be put on a waiting list and fulfilled depending on lumber stock
-
FYI, I have completed rough milling for all available orders. I have some stock left if anyone is interested above and beyond the 30.
-
All rests have been milled, dimensioned, and now sanded.
All that's left is the very long and slow finishing process. Patience is the hardest part.
-
Thanks for the update. I'm almost salivating..
-
I snapped a couple of photos of the rests in my finishing area. These all have a coat of oil and at least one coat of varnish.

Now that all of the orders have been made, I still have some lumber left. I've taken 2 additional already. All you need to do is fill out the Google Order Form.

That's what the respirator is for. Cats don't seem to mind the smell and they're the primary users of the basement.

Is there room to get in on this?

Trayke, thanks for the pics! Is my rest shown in there by chance?
-
http://imgur.com/a/YNzNq
This rest is pretty much everything I expected - thanks a ton trayke. It's a bit hard to make out but it does shimmer quite a bit, especially in the strong sun we've been getting up in the northeast.
Not *quite* sure but it does look like the logo faded a bit on the edge? I can't see any numbers >: but otherwise this both feels and looks fantastic, and the chatoyancy strongly reminds me of tiger's eye stone, especially by the darker areas.
-
Oh, you received yours already? It's GORGEOUS!
-
Beautiful!!!! Can't wait.
-
I'll throw an order when I get home!
Thanks!
-
Oh, you received yours already? It's GORGEOUS!
Yep! I was the guinea pig for the buy because of address concerns (which I botched anyway but at least I have it now haha)
-
taryke - these things look amazing! I'm definitely late to the party, but if you still have stock left, I'd love to get in. I just submitted through your order form.
-
!!!! I'm so hype about this!! THESE ARE BEAUTIFUL
-

Yes, he did. He arranged ahead of time to rush the order because of address concerns. I needed to practice the finish so it made for a good opportunity.

I could do something like this, though the challenge is building a form that fits the rest. And another challenge is finding pecky lumber which I have so far not had any luck with.
Maybe I'll work on this as part of my next group buy.

Sorry, I just saw this. Yes, I have stock left. I bought extras to build my parents some picture frames and me some furniture. Turns out my parents wanted *SMALL* picture frames. Oh well, glad you guys are here :)

Just wanted to provided a quick update. 14 wrests are completed and ready to ship out!
Important note: The wrests are completed in the order that I received them, however if a particular wrest requires more finish, touch up, time to cure, or you placed a subsequent order, it can mean that an order placed early doesn't ship immediately. I want to make sure that each wrest is high enough quality before I send it out the door.
-
6 wrests have been packaged and are ready for shipment. I sent an email to those that will be receiving them soon.
-
In for one, do you consider make cases from these woods?

Unfortunately I'm not setup for making cases at the moment.

And with 42 orders placed, I've all but run out of wood.
I've turned off the Google Form and will not be accepting new orders until all existing orders are fulfilled. Thank you all for making this such a big success. The first big batch shipped out yesterday and more will be shipping soon.

Excellent news! Can you give us an idea of about what order you are on in terms of production? Certainly not trying to rush you, but obviously I'm naturally curious.
-
Oh, and I meant to ask ages ago about your finishing process. What products do you use, how many layers and so on. :)
-
Gonna receive my rest today ^-^
-
Oh, and I meant to ask ages ago about your finishing process. What products do you use, how many layers and so on. :)
2 coats of watco danish oil applied with 400 grit wet/dry sandpaper. Let dry for 2-3 days.
3 coats of arm-r-seal semi gloss. Applied 1 side at a time, 8 hours between sides, 24 hours between re-coats.
Rubbed down with a 600 grit sanding sponge to level finish.
More coats of ArS as the boards appearance dictates and rub downs.
-
Anything we should be careful with around the wrist rest? Common food products that will react horribly with the seal?
-
Trayke will likely have more detail, but you don't want to let wet things sit. You're unlikely to use your really fancy rest as a beverage coaster, but if you do, it will show rings that can't be removed except for a full strip and refinish. Things should bead up nicely though, so if anything accidentally gets on it, wipe down immediately and you'll be fine.
You shouldn't leave any urathane product in direct sunlight, and this urathane product in particular. You will experience significant yellowing. The flip side of it is this final finish will over time take a slight Amber cast and get a bit darker over time. It should result in a really beautiful, warm, rich finish that won't reach its "final form" for many years. Unless you blast it with UV and yellow it of course. So don't do that.
-
Nice, looking forward to people showing off action shots
-
These look absolutely gorgeous! Looking forward to everyone's pictures (and will be watching in case the potential for new orders pops up!).
-
Marking for notifications. ;)
-

When I ship, I send out an email with care instructions. In general, it's water resistant, not waterproof. If you spill something on it, warm water will clean it. Chemicals won't bother it, but hard abrasions might.
-
Just received today, looks great, but it already wobbles because one of the rubber feet isn't as recessed as the other three. Whats the best way to fix that?

I'm sorry to hear that's happening.
As I mentioned in my shipment email, that's one of the big challenges with natural wood. Wood moves. It happens with humidity changes, and temperature changes, and it's also a reflection of the surface that it's sitting on. Before I send each rest out I ensure that it's level on the cast iron bed of my jointer, which is ground to level to a thousandth of a degree. I know that doesn't help the fact that your rest is wobbling though, so it's little consolation. What I usually recommend is to use something small and thin to help level out the uneven spot and ensure it doesn't wobble.
-
That is so gorgeous ^-^
Thank you for the wonderful photos and I'm so glad that you like it.

Not super into all the blingy stuff, but a wooden case with underglow shining through the poured resin would be awesome.

Well you'll be happy to know that everyone's wrests have begun the finishing process. This is the hardest part as the first thing you do is have to wait 4 days without doing anything. Luckily I'm going out of town this weekend so it will be easier for me.

I think he's referring to the chatoyance, which is the 3D like effect old growth mahogany has. It is hard to capture on camera. Some boards look completely different as you move them side to side in the light. It's really crazy.
All wrests are done, I'm just trying to find time to package them up and ship them up. Being out of town 2 weeks in a row is not helping.

Also looking forward to the scent now :)

Hey trayke, is there any way to smoothen out any very shallow scratches? Wasn't paying attention and very lightly scratched the coating I think.
-
Hey trayke, is there any way to smoothen out any very shallow scratches? Wasn't paying attention and very lightly scratched the coating I think.
Already? You're not supposed to go scratching it so soon. That's something that's supposed to happen over years until it has that beautiful worn and weathered look!
Send me a photo and I can advise. If it's shallow you may be able to scuff it out with some steel wool.
-
I don't understand, why would you take it out of the specially lit display case? :))
-
I just dropped 7 more wrests in the mailbox and emailed those that have theirs on the way.
My goal is to have all finished wrests mailed by the end of the week. There were 2 wrests that I have decided to redo the finish on. It just wasn't good enough. Unfortunately those 2 will take another week to complete and mail. My apologies.

Haha, sorry. It's super, super shallow - like, honestly, it's very difficult to capture on camera. It's practically nothing, and I'm 99% sure it's only in the finish.

You could use a piece of steel wool or a piece of 400 or 600 grit wet dry sandpaper. If It were me I'd use the wet dry sandpaper and dip it in some water and dish soap. While polyurethane varnish is quite tough, it will scratch so don't get toooo wild and crazy with it.

Mine arrived today, will have to get pictures later, but not sure I can do it justice.
The rest looks almost completely different depending on if viewed from the left, or right. Almost like one side is a negative of the other. Very interesting effect.

Tonight the wrests have been to Cologne and Malmo, although that might actually have some link to reality ;)

Alright, I'm not going to lie. I had absolutely no idea that the smell would end up being one of the things people liked the most!
-
if anyone is interested, I have a 60% rest that someone chose not to follow-through on. Send me a PM or post here. Thanks!
-
Received mine yesterday as well. AWESOME work and craftsmanship. Thanks!

As of this morning, all Wrests have been shipped! Thank you everyone, this has been a very fun experience. I hope the wrests add that special extra something to your beautiful battle stations.
If you have not received any shipping information from PayPal or communication from me, please reach out to me ASAP.

I received mine today, despite the shipping info site being a little less... helpful :)

Anyways, they look better than I even hoped, and while I agree that the scent is nice, it also has quite a bit of finish in it. You guys might just be high :D
Anyways, thanks a lot, I love them, and when the glue is dry I can start putting new magnets on all my keyboards :)
-
Total relief you finally got it. I was a little worried when the shipping site started going wonky. I can't wait to see how the magnets turn out!
-
Got mine last week as well. Waiting for some keys for my keyboard before I take beauty shots.

Yeah, I think the Norwegian Post site had the right info all along, while the USPS site just had some incorrect info coming in.

Somewhere along the lines I got my wires crossed and may have sent an extra wrist rest to someone. Or possibly sent someone the wrong rest. If you received a wrist rest with rounded corners in the front, please let me know. If only so I know I'm not losing my mind and didn't imagine fulfilling that special request. It's a TKL.

I saw this on Massdrop, and I just... laughed out loud :)

I know there is some way to make the link work for those of you without accounts there, but I don't know how.

Like so:

And I know, it's hard to compare any of the Royal Glam or Battlestations.io rests to this one.

Anyone noticed that the length doesn't even match...

Received mine a while ago and finally had a chance to use it, it's beautiful and very well made (I'm in the minority and don't like the smell though haha). Thank you for the group buy, I think this may be the fastest and smoothest one I've joined here on GH!
-
Trayke, I just wanna drop in and say thank you for an incredible product and one of the fastest group buys I have ever seen. Here are some glory shots (I had to put giant feet under the wrist rest to suit my angle; it's not actually magically floating):

I forgot to post this from a while back. I ordered a few sheets of these adhesive non-slip pads (http://www.ebay.com/itm/221310033971?) for an another project, but it works great to stop the wobble that was occurring with the wristrest. Uses real 3M adhesive too :thumb:
-
Heh, I think I spent a week switching out bumbers, but in the end I did it with the included pack. :)
-
I found the rest to be too low, so I ended up going with giganto stick-on furniture feet that are about 2/5 of an inch tall. Perfect height now, and looking gorgeous. :D
-
resurrecting this post... sry :-*
any chance of a round 2 though? hard to find mahogany wrist rests!
-
I would be in! Love my wrests, but I think I need at least one TKL or 60+numpad
