Title: Make open GBs stand out more
Post by: tofgerl on Thu, 18 August 2016, 02:58:25
I'm always in the market for new Group Buys to sign up for, but it's hard to separate the ones where I have time to sign up from the ones that are closed. It wouldn't be necessary to make a whole new category or anything, but could we add an icon, make them sticky, make them put some [TAG] in the beginning of their topic or something?

I agree on this, perhaps the following should be added:

Another option would be to make it mandatory to have the status in the title, such as (Open), (Pre-Production), (Production), (Packing), (Shipped), and (Closed). So it would be:

can we just ****ing move them to another sub forum? it's actually so cluttered and annoying, even with tags. just look at reddit, we're on a platform that allows us to be more organized why should we resort to the same methods?

In that case, could we move IC into the GB as a sub?
GB/IC
GB/Open
GB/Closed
GB/Finished
GB/Never Happened due to lack of interest

Would be pretty symmetrical...

Whilst we're at it, can we sort the rest of Geekhack out? It's a ****ing mess

nothing productive comes out of member auction links and great finds really should be a singular thread in my opinion.

I think a lot of reorganization can help the forum but I imagine it's too much effort.

Krap, Booper, ETF, Zorb, KK, and maybe Doom all deserve their own Artisan Services (which should just be shortened to Artisans) subforums.

I think a Creator subforum would be great, or maybe renaming Artisan Services to Creators, and moving threads like Duck, TGR, Swill, perhaps me in the future.

Group Buys could do with separate subforums for IC, Open, Closed, and Finished statuses to keep clutter to a minimum.

The Vendor subforum isn't really used apart from the child boards, and most of those are inactive.

It needs to be easier to browse, but at the minute I feel like everything is a cluttered mess that hasn't been looked at. I think if I wanted to find a thread as a noob, it'd be quite hard.

Classified and member auction links should have higher post requirements/account age or something, turns out anyone can post in member auction links aka link their own **** and have an auction instead of using classified.

There are also lots of pinned threads that don't really need to be there as they're very outdated or inactive. I get why some are there, because the search function isn't the best.

I'm just rambling  :))

If nothing else, this would be the most helpful (to me).  I continually click on GB threads only to find that they were started and closed months ago!  Now, by habit, I look at the date on the first post and try to figure out if it's still going on.

Each creator (that has a child board) has a catalog, feedback, gallery (post your _____), and sale/announcement thread.
Each vendor has a feedback thread, announcement thread, and gallery (post your _____).

Recommended child boards are listed underneath the subforum title, other creators/vendors make one thread in the subforum.

I probably left some stuff out but this is how I, personally, think it should be sorted. Order doesn't represent anything, it's just how it came out after messing with everything.

Creators and vendors are very far apart on your chart. Why aren't they just subs in the same forum? Change it from marketplace to "Trade" or something?

The order I put them in doesn't mean anything FYI :))

I don't think Creators should fit under Marketplace, as there is a lot more to their craft than just selling stuff.

There should be a rule to eliminate 2 subforums for each added.

I would love a forum for open buys and when the buy is closed the thread is moved.  BUt this might be a lot of work :(
Start simple, make the IC/Open/Closed/Finished subforums and make an announcement telling people who have open buys to report their threads to be moved. No point in moving existing finished or closed buys.

Oh, and close the GB forum for new threads, making it so that all threads have to be made in subforums after a few weeks, when people have gotten used to it. Same with the existing IC forum, should be closed and all new threads started in the new place.

All other changes can be made later on, we can have individual discussions on each change and how to make it work the best.

How would the mods prefer we decide the GB subforum changes? A poll? I think further changes could be a good thing, but let's focus this thread on this very specific and very simple change, instead of standing around trying to change the entire world. Perfect is the enemy of good enough.

Lots of good ideas in here. Many of the points mentioned have been discussed by the mods and are things we're definitely interested in doing. The Vendor and Artisan subforums definitely need a cleaning up, and I think a couple other areas could be combined to be cleaner.

As for the GB subforum, a tag at the beginning of the title makes sense. This would allow organizers to continue to use parentheses at the end to give "soft updates" (things like "Updated XX/XX/XXXX" or "Waiting on vendor"), but the general status can be updated to the left. Or is that too cluttered? I think having it on the left is helpful since they will all be aligned, making it easier to scan through.

I think the [GB] tag at the start of a thread in the Group Buy sub-forum is pretty irrelevant, so that does free up some space. Maybe have:

Doesn't look too bad....?

The one problem with [GB] being irrelevant is the fact that some people don't consume the site from strictly a board based view, so [GB] becomes relevant in those cases, i.e. Unread View and Spy view.

As chuckdee said, those tags are for people viewing in Spy/Unread to make them easily distinguishable.  Maybe we could simply expand the single tag to be [GB-OPEN] rather than [GB][OPEN].  ?

If they're too lazy to update a tag then perhaps they shouldn't be running and organizing a group buy with thousands of dollars exchanging hands.

Right, but neither of these will actually happen! They don't happen now, nothing will change. If the GBs are sorted in subs, I think people will want to report threads that have changed since they'll be harder to find otherwise.
