Hello all!
After seeing so many wonderful keycap designs and creations here, I'm going to give it a try too.
I've taken an interest in the ability to cast my own creations, and I'd like to share and document my experience here. Hopefully others can learn from it too.
My equipment and materials:
California Air Tools 5510SE Air Compressor
Grizzly H6329 Paint Tank
Smooth-On Smooth-Cast 300 (too short potlife for me... now I only use this for double-shot details)
Smooth-On Smooth-Cast 305
Smooth-On Oomoo 30
Smooth-On Universal Mold Release (Not good for making 2 part silicon molds... Use Mann Ease Release 200 for that)
Mann Ease Release (use for making silicon molds and with $ynth)
UVO Resin Coloring
Super Sculpey Clay
Sculpting Tools
~:$ynth
After lots of reading of other's experiences I went with this list of stuff, and so far it's all working great.
That air compressor is quiet enough where I can use it indoors (don't have a garage). I did have to purchase a hose+couplings for it though.
I converted the paint tank to a pressure pot pretty easily by removing the extras and a couple trips to the hardware store, no leaks :D
The materials all worked great, I now use more appropriate materials for my needs.

I think the first few trials came out okay for my first mold. I'm already making another one, hopefully it turns out better.
After a week of experimenting I think I've learned quite a bit about the process and hope to improve my results, and eventually move on to my own artisan designs.
There's more to come!
I do have 1 question though if anyone can help me. My keycaps fit on the MX stem just fine, but I feel they are a bit loose. I can pull the keycaps off just fine without the need of a keycap puller. Any tips to make a tighter or more precise stem fit in the mold?
Solution: So letting the resin cure longer before removing the stem and putting it on a switch has improved the results. Stems are tight fitting now.
Tried some sculpting directly onto the $ynth. I've learned it's very challenging turning ideas into clay... but I'll keep practicing. I think each design will take several attempts in clay before I come up with something I like.
Here's a V1 prototype of what I imagine as a "Bamboo Key." I'll try sculpting it again to look cleaner with smoother sides, sharper edges at the top, and maybe add a leaf stem on the side.
Also my first attempt at two color blending on a key, just playing around with it. Stay tuned for V2~ :D

I also made a mushroom sculpt with a rather angry looking face on it, but I'm not proud of it enough to show it lol. It will need a couple revisions, or I might just scrap it.
Remodeled the design, and I think this came out much better.

Hehe cute :D I like it.
Also new design! I'll probably work on this a little more, but I think its coming along nicely. Hopefully I'll get this molded and cast next weekend.

Dragons are always a win in my book.
Thanks Raenbo, jakejake, and romevi :D
Here's how it turned out. Had to shave the front and back in quite a bit because it was touching other keys, and added fangs on the corners so that the corners weren't too thin.

Ha ha, I like how they look squat. And the bottoms are very clean.
Weekend results and a name!
I've decided to make a brand name - Keylusion :D

I continued to work on the Dragon design this past weekend. I've cleaned up the design some - smoothed the edges, shaved here and there, and I think it looks better.
Color mixing and experimenting has been fun. Sorry about the poor pictures, all I have is a phone camera.

That blue one is mine, right? ;)
So with the name change are you going to change your username as well? And how does the bottom of the cap look?
I like the concept of Yin and Yang, and I think it would be cool to incorporate that concept with a keycap design.

I'll make them in pairs with matching colors.

Project documentation:
Had an issue today where the stem insert of the $ynth would get stuck after curing and I had to pry it out, breaking the keycap in the process. Happened the last 2 times :( I always use a generous amount of mold release on everything... so I'm not sure why it would get stuck. I'll soak the stem overnight to get it nice and clean, and hopefully that will fix it. Need to take more care in my process I guess.
These remind me of an argonian from skyrim, or as romevi says, a squat dragon. Really digging it :thumb:
Been working on a new design~ It's still in the works, but I like to document stages and progress. Still needs another iteration of smoothing.
Also I managed to add a maker's mark on the inside-bottom of the keycap using the $ynth. I think it's a nice little touch.
Kitsune (狐, キツネ) is the Japanese word for fox.
So I introduce the Keytsune :D

Worked on a new sculpt this weekend.
I call it - Chinchillin :D

I used to have a chinchilla as a pet for several years. This is me holding my little guy. They're so cute and fun, I miss him.

You should make one with 3D glasses.

As a bibliophile, I absolutely must have one. I hope these and the kitsunes are included in the next sale.
It's been a little while, but I'd like to get back to casting.
Tried sculpting something new. I envisioned an anglerfish.
Angler
Body: dark colors (blue, black, purple)
Eyes/Lure: glow-in-the-dark colors (blue, green, white) - bought some nice new powders!
Would appreciate some feedback. I'm not sure it's as I envisioned it, so I might try another attempt, but I wanted to share this one.
My initial thought is that the lure looks kinda strange sitting there... but I don't know how to incorporate it. I might make it skinnier... hmmm.
Re-sculpt Plan: Remove the lure altogether and do a ragged top fin. Also thinner teeth.

I like the re-sculpt plan. The thinner teeth and the fin would look awesome. Can't wait to see what you come up with.
