I've got a low end corsair mechanical, but I'd like to upgrade. Relatively new to mechs. I just ordered a Cherry Mx switch sampler to start figuring out which switch set I'd like to go with. After that I'm mostly interested in key caps, and maybe building a board from a kit some day.

Yeah, ****. I couldn't wait, I just dropped $230 for a minivan with Mx greens at massdrop. Why did I wander into r/mechanicalkeyboards today?

Welcome to Geekhack!
Did the Massdrop Minivan come assembled, or have you got some soldering to do?
The cost is probably a bit higher than a mass-produced keyboard as you are getting a limited run custom keyboard with aluminium case. You could have settled for a QFR, or even a venerable Filco, but where's the fun in that? ;)
Either way it should be a great keyboard and last you for years - just think of how many rubber dome keyboards you would have bought and discarded in that time. Ok, maybe not that many, but some anyway. And you wouldn't have enjoyed typing on them.
If you're worried about getting sucked too far down this little rabbit hole, glance at this thread (https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=67980.0), it might help put thing into perspective a bit.

Perspective? I'm already trying to figure out how to get a pok3r with greens and maybe some LEDs(if I can find a decent color) then a key set to boot with out my old lady finding out. I don't even have the minivan yet! I still have to get soldering tools for that damn thing. It's going to take some good psychology to spin this thing.

Just get HHKB. Last keyboard you will need, costs less than your Minivan (which IMO is too small for practical use, also I don't like Massdrop), and no soldering. The only MX boards I have enjoyed using were korean custom boards of up to $$$$..
