“Two possibilities exist: either we are alone in the Universe or we are not. Both are equally terrifying.”
― Arthur C. Clarke

As a long-time contributor (in terms of computing cycles) to SETI@home, Rowdy is excited!
Is it only a matter of time? Another civilisation will not necessarily be targetting Earth with a communication beam, not necessarily knowing we are here. But they may be polluting interstellar space with their random radio noise, some of which may eventually reach us, just as some of our noise may eventually reach other civilisations with the ability to detect it.
Waiting for the day when "another signal has been detected" is a common occurrence, and a probe or something is launched to rendezvous with the signal's source.

Tp is proof that life from another universe exists. Case closed, put'm of safe and let them hang. We're outta here.

tp4 is an AI, not necessarily of alien origin.

tp4 is an AI, not necessarily of alien origin.
But the thought process that it puts out is clearly not of human origin

Though Tp4 dares to dream that perhaps one day, Tp4 will get uploaded..

Put a knife in the toaster whilst it's toasting. You will be uploaded into the power grid, from there you can branch off into their control computers then tp be surfing the net for reaslisies

Exciting indeed! It's a long way away though so will be a while before anything comes of it, even if/when it's confirmed.

Just imagine surfing the web one day and suddenly random words start appearing all over the screen.
It's TP4!!!1!!1!! He's still alive! Somewhere in the network.

Centauri? That URL gave me goosebumps! Pretty cool finding :)

I still don't understand what makes this signal more plausible.. Just because it's bigger?

Confirm. tp claims plausible deniability to save his celestial body buddies

After reading about "the Inhibitors" in Alastair Reynolds' "Revelation Space" universe, I wonder whether we should lay low.

After reading about "the Inhibitors" in Alastair Reynolds' "Revelation Space" universe, I wonder whether we should lay low.
There is the argument that any species capable of creating technology to travel interstellar distances and then spending the time to travel (assuming a lack of hyperspace or wormhole transportation) would be sufficiently advanced to be friendly to any other species they meet.
Especially considering that the universe is so large and apparently so sparsely populated (at least with species at technologically similar levels).
OTOH there could be a species out there with no home planet that just travels around looking for signals from other civilisations, landing on those planets, totally plundering all resources, and move on to the next one.

would be sufficiently advanced to be friendly to any other species they meet.
Reynolds' notion is more complex and nuanced than that.
The Inhibitors are essentially a network of machine intelligences that dramatically raise the bar on the definition of "sufficiently advanced" after their creators moved on to the next realm, and don't want it disrupted by angry newcomers.

There is no sense in looking for extraterrestic lifeforms. You could spend your pc cycles to a windows screensaver instead :-) Not because there aren't any extraterrestics. It simply is better living without any knowledge or contact about it, and probably that's one of the reasons we will not get any evidence in the near future. If you are clever you leave no traces, and become invisible. Unlike us ;D

It depends on the gap in capability between the aliens and ourselves..
Look at the distance between Humans and monkeys.. AT BEST, a monkey would constitute a pet..
Now, an Alien race capable of harnessing space travel.. We would be even further than monkeys, we'd be much like fish, not even aware of the concept of water.

One is never oneself, One is only ever the observer of one's own predicament.

Like most things in life, I don't know all the theories and proofs, I just do it.
A machine intelligence would be much more worrisome - they probably wouldn't be burdened by a conscience, and the time spent travelling through space would be meaningless.
Their motives would be less easy to discern, and communication with them may be impossible of they don't want to communicate.

**** aliens. I want a planet suitable for human living so I can escape this craphole.
-
**** aliens.
You could do that to them too, if the physiology was compatible.

I see new opportunities for the... cinema industry.

They've known about the water they just can't get close enough to confirm because of some kind of agreement. Something about not mixing foreign single-celled organisms with the Martian water or whatever. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I think I'm going to side with Stephen Hawking on this one and hope that we keep our mouths shut.
"We don't know much about aliens, but we know about humans. If you look at history, contact between humans and less intelligent organisms have often been disastrous from their point of view, and encounters between civilizations with advanced versus primitive technologies have gone badly for the less advanced. A civilization reading one of our messages could be billions of years ahead of us. If so, they will be vastly more powerful, and may not see us as any more valuable than we see bacteria."
-
Their motives would be less easy to discern, and communication with them may be impossible of they don't want to communicate.
That is Reynolds' point. They don't have motives, only the task to utterly destroy space-faring civilizations in their entirety.
Consider it a full-on test of how genuinely advanced the group really is, and the medium is the message.
When Reynolds gets going, he can be about the most disturbing writer out there.
-
I think killing-oppressors, is an overly simplistic view of aliens.
and it's actually only ONE of the narrow possibilities where the Alien's space faring technologies are achieved radically before they evolve to grasp at desires beyond merely conversion of mass into one's species.
Let's say they achieve space faring technologies early, IF they're still capitalist , aka , self hating juvenile youth, Then that technology is far more dangerous to THEMSELVES than anyone else.

I keep telling people that the 90's are back..

a million years is really just a blip in geological time scale.
Even if we're alone now, there 's no reason another race couldn't form and overtake us..
WHICH is why it's important that we build the anti-asteroid/planet laser FIRST.
