I think it's something to do with that 'smiley face U' that they love.

Now why the UK (and Ireland by extension) ended up with a layout that's somewhat similar to the US one, but ever so slightly different, is what keeps me awake at night...

Recycled Goods has a P70 for sale. Apparently it's not functioning properly, but hey, you get one of IBM's Alps plate spring keyboards.

Seems like knowing the hot end of the soldering iron from the cold one may be helpful with those these days. The floppies are most critical (as for other PS/2s), as they aren't dust-protected very well and seem to use these lousy early surface mount electrolytics of M2 fame. Last time I used it, my P70 would also take two attempts to boot up, so it seems it needs some work elsewhere as well.

Interesting stuff, especially given how expensive PS/2 machines were...

How is the keyboard on that P70? Any good?

Not good because of casing and construction as a keyboard.
Get 5576-001 or 002 if you really want to try and examine said switches.

Tempting; he's living in the next village from here.  Looks like the
electromagnet is missing its bell though...

Just sold at 77€. Highest price for a keyboard I've seen so far on German ebay, but I've followed it only for a weeks.

Looks like a beam spring keyboard..

The clue's in the name, and the magnificient mess of wires and coils around the switches - it's a Hall Effect keyboard with Micro Switch switches.

Honeywell is the company that owns Micro Switch.

There are several white label M's on ebay.de at any time, going for 25€ on average. And this one goes to 40+ within hours? Doubt it.
