Title: Male vs Female Cable Connectors
Post by: tp4tissue on Wed, 14 September 2016, 18:41:13
Is there a general convention of when to use either one or the other ?

So, Laptops would mostly have the female ends for example..

So I guess the larger Source of something usually has the female ?

It often has to do with which side is "hot". You don't want your hot male prong sticking out all over the place.

Even more simply described as "upstream -> downstream" although the electrical socket in your wall deviates from this.

I know someone who refers to them as "mother" and "father" connectors.

Feel free to release a laptop with a male connector, I'd love to see that

If you snap that the whole laptop is ****ed

I get what you mean TP. I have been in a situation where some monitors have male connectors (admittedly some older models) and it was infuriating. IMO everything should be female except the cable.

So often the connectors are just failure points waiting to happen.

Apple's brilliant magnetic connectors are one of the greatest innovations ever, and that sort of thing needs to be implemented a lot more.

I was under the impression that they owned it, but maybe just the specific instance.

yeah I meant inside the female end there always a little male-like prong to fit backward to the cable

think of it like the MX slider inside the Topre one.

Why don't you ask them what they self-identify as you cis-gendered neo-nazi scum of the Earth.
What about magnetic connectors? They don't "plug" into anything. You can't label cables like that. Stop oppressing my rights.

I would say there's still a male and female..

Because they always built a small Ridge in the male end and a depression into the female end.. so it doesn't move about in y and z

I guess magnetic connectors are asexual?

Their poles exist in energy rather than matter.

But that conflicts with what user -Spopepro- said.

Where you don't want Hot Power on the Male prongs.. because it's more easy to get electrocuted..

Unless we're not talking about the give-th of  power, and signal only ... ?

So often the connectors are just failure points waiting to happen.

Apple's brilliant magnetic connectors are one of the greatest innovations ever, and that sort of thing needs to be implemented a lot more.

Only some of them. Micro USB connectors are terrible for their soldering and come apart really easy. Mini USB however are more sturdy.

And as for Apple's magnetic chargers... I know quite a few people who detest them.
