I realise these caps are super expensive, but, I wanted to explore the use of high-end materials and finishes on a keycap (the same used for high-end watches). I really think that this cap will be a unique experience with the liquidy smooth finish, the weight of stainless steel and the heavily rounded domed surface that your finger will sink into.
To produce the finish and tolerances I require, I have established a relationship with a watch manufacturer who will be able to achieve the finish and coating this cap requires.

No production samples as of yet since just buying one of these is incredulously expensive. I will be getting a sample when I put the bulk order in though as they provide a discount when put in with a big order, so I can check it off and make sure it's made to spec before going into full production.

I've decided that I will be extending the close-date to when the prototype arrives (manufacturing will have to start at this date regardless) as some people would like to see the cap in person before pushing the "go" button :P

I've added some extra finishes to the keycap to improve the quality too. I've spec'd it to be bead blasted at the bottom (so the top will have to be masked during that process), then once that's all done the top half will be polished. Can't wait for the sample to come in :D

So I'm making assumptions here, but I think the coating will be chromium nitride which is very hard and slick. It should both resist showing fingerprints pretty well, and be very easy to clean.

Hey mate, no, it's not. I mean it will fit on a Topre stem - but it will fall off, with a bit of ingenuity and tape it'll friction fit nicely. It does however fit on Novatouch stems :)
I don't market these as Topre stem though, as I really think it needs to snap fit for it to be defined as one

Well, these wont exactly be coming with gloves.... butttttt, they're coming with something else cool ;) ;)
Also, here is a photo of the underside, went the extra mile to get these beadblasted at the base. So the top surface is polished and the underside is beadblasted!

TMX is super difficult to machine due to the undercut, it would require a custom/special tool. The rigid stainless steel also cannot flex as compared to plastic which is required for the snap fit.
However, this stem will actually fit on a Topre stem, which can be seen with my other caps. But it will not be a tight fit - you could create a shim to make it hold on tight though!

TMX is super difficult to machine due to the undercut, it would require a custom/special tool. The rigid stainless steel also cannot flex as compared to plastic which is required for the snap fit.
However, this stem will actually fit on a Topre stem, which can be seen with my other caps. But it will not be a tight fit - you could create a shim to make it hold on tight though!

Hey dude yeah, you'll find that they'll fit terribly on some switches, and well on others - I use cherry blue and they fit perfect. That's one thing that's really problematic with doing a metal stem, I'm going to refine it a bit to have a little more friction so hopefully it holds on better for most switches :)

Soooo.. all the keycaps where machined, beadblasted and polished.
But, the PVD supplier can not hang them at quantity the way they are machined.
So now, we have revised the design to include a feature where they can hang the caps, there will be another delay as they have to remachine and repolish them. Will keep you updated!

Yeah, they're covering it and are very apologetic :) It's more the PVD suppliers fault if anything - they did the sample cap with no issues, but can't seem to do it at quantity without a feature to hang it.
So as it stands, they have made a new fixture to hold the part, then they are going to machine it tomorrow then repolish the next day (24/11) then will be going back to the PVD supplier after that :)
So, it's sounding like it will be done ideally next week.

ALSO NOTE! For the caps to fit best, it must be aligned with the RAMA on the back reading left to right. The Stem is not symmetric horizontally and vertically, the widths are different :)

Mine was waiting for me when I got home today :) . Heavier than I was expecting, even compared to other metal caps I have. Finish is really nice, and doesn't pick up fingerprints anywhere near as much as I thought it would. Feels great, and packaging is awesome of course ^^.
Yeah dude, the weight is super surprising - when I had a pallet of them I was like goddamn - HOW. Stainless Steel is amazing :P I'd like to experiment heavier metals, but you'd need springs to match :P
And yup, fingerprints aren't as bad as you'd expect for something black - and if it is really annoying you can get an oleophobic coating and drop it on :D Thanks dude!

Hey mate, what switches are you using? Did your package come with the disclaimer? The caps will fit perfectly on some switches and not so well on others - since they are metallic the stem have no flex in comparison to a plastic cap. If the cap doesn't fit tightly on the switch you can add a piece of tape on top of the stem and then place it down on the switch to act as a shim. This should create a tight hold. It must also be orientated so the logo on the base reads horizontally. Unfortunately due to the large variance in the MX range, it must be designed for the maximum in mind as to not strip the larger-end MX stems :( Thanks for the kind remarks with the packaging :) Oh andthat is a crazily metallic board :O FULLMETALCAPS

Did you even read the instructions included with the package, I had the same issue with Gateron switches, just use a bit of tape as per instructions. I don't have this issue when used with cherry switched

I'll wait till my X caps gets here and measure the stems with a caliper. I'm interested in finding out the relative tolerances between the two caps.
In any case, if you are not satisfied with them, I'm sure Rama will let you return them for a refund, I know he stands behind the quality of his products 100%

My duckey has cherry switches. I know about the tape trick. I am saying that these caps cost a fortune, I expected it be perfect. It is a very nice one, but this looseness killed it for me. I was expecting it to be some what loose like the other non shinny caps, which I believed is also from Rama, but the gaps on these are much wider.

Yeah this. The problem with the MX switch and machined caps is you have to design for the maximum width - and then use shims to fit onto thinner stems. It's just the nature of it - there's no way around it :(

After debating, I decide to keep the caps, too much hassle to send back. Rama offered a full refund if I send back 11 caps and let me keep 1 for shipping fee. He's being extremely nice and generous, I definitely would do business again.

I've gotten some messages of other people in the US who haven't received them yet - think there's a bit of delay because of the holidays - so hopefully they should start arriving this week or next :)
