Title: OCD / Perfectionism is killing me aaaargh
Post by: iLLucionist on Thu, 20 October 2016, 15:27:28
Settling a new (perfect of course) build. I'll call this the "OCD ripple effect". Chose the Maximus VIII Hero and (probably) noctua case fans. But but... motherboard is black/red, noctua fans are brown/beige. So I thought ok let's use the fractal case fans, but no PWM. Are you serious? So back to the noctuas. Different cpu cooler? The BeQuiet Dark X Pro? Nahh.. gonna overclock my 6700K from 4.0 to 4.6/4.7. Still keeping the Noctua NN-D15. Back to square 1: red with beige. Different motherboard? What about the Asus Sabertooth Z170 Mark 1? Nahh... fans on motherboard, OC featuers not as decent, less mem compatibility. I CANNOT WIN WITH THIS BUILD.

Should really put "(PC Build Halp") in thread title. Or "ramen". Either one will get tp in here to help you pick parts.

agreed, make sure to misspell some stuff as well

also paint exists, just a bit more work for something that'll look and perform how you want

If you're going by color..

White is the cool new one, because there didn't used to be white motherboards.

It also doesn't show dust as easily,  so... less cleaning than black..

buhhhh i don't think i've seen the Premium boards in white yet..

Also, if you're going z170,  don't get SUPER premium, get something in the middle, the super premium has stupid stuff NO ONE ever uses..  and almost all the extra features cause latency spikes..   And then there's the irq sharing which most boards may not let you configure,  conflicts no,  but again, latency, and sometimes interference.

I only care for speed. And color consistency. And silence. That's all. The only current premium board I know of that is white from Asus, is the Sabertooth Z170 S. But BUT... De NH-D15 won't fit coz of the mounting bracket. Official Noctua site says should fit, but pcper says it doesnt: https://www.pcper.com/reviews/Motherboards/ASUS-Sabertooth-Z170-Mark-1-Motherboard-Review/Overclocking-and-Conclusion (https://www.pcper.com/reviews/Motherboards/ASUS-Sabertooth-Z170-Mark-1-Motherboard-Review/Overclocking-and-Conclusion)

I don't need extras. I'm grumpy nerd... I want 'em fast ram, cpu, and storage. I don't care about Asus Extreme Bullsh*t Suite 9000 Turbo Apps with the "military alien mars-approved extreme durable playboy tested sick extra megaton edition deluxe luxury armor". Just gimme speed and silence. And matchin' colors darnit!

The Asus ROG line is IMHO worth it , if you're going for a high OC and you plan to use the PC for ___5+ years..

They do alot more validation testing on the ROG line, so it's essentially a more-refined motherboard, as they've tweaked more bugs out of it..  "still lots of bugs" but less so than the less premium line.

But you should prolly research whether any of the new features increase latency, that sort of thing..

Things like,  I remember when certain motherboards would have really bad integrated sound, because there were so many traces close to the analogue out circuits.

I actually remember that... bad integrated sound. It was so bad that when I'd play music in Linux my system would noticeably slow down, particularly storage. I guess the memory/cpu/IO lanes needed by shared back then with all other features. And don't forget about IRQ conflicts. I've even had them in Linux! If I remember correctly I had the Asus A7V8X-X with AMD Athlon XP 3200 Cpu: http://www.ibora.net/board/up/1077782678-e1198_a7v8x-x.pdf (http://www.ibora.net/board/up/1077782678-e1198_a7v8x-x.pdf)

And remember those days with the NVIDIA north bridge? Or was it south bridge? They were blazingly fast but SO MANY bugs and hangs.

Tp... what do you think is better when I push the CPU to the limits:

Skylake + Z170 + 6700K ---> geekbench 3 single 5378 multicore 17273

--- Or ---

Haswell + X99 + 5820K ---> geekbench 3 single 4277 multicore 20523

Between Skylake and Haswell ,  their IPC performance is within 5-7% of each other.  The bench numbers only represent typically the difference of the processor clocks, as the Skylake comes clocked higher.

I think the extra core is nice, but if they don't release skylake-e down the line for it or if they did, and it's not within budget,  then x99 would be a waste, because it would've been $150 extra for the motherboard vs z170, while z170 still has the higher ipc in the end.

If you do Cad/Rendering/Solidworks/Adobe Suite,   ALL THE TIME (like a job),  consider x99,  if this is computer is your badge as G4m3rbr0,   then z170 is the way to go.

Thanks tp! Z170 it is. Also, I'm wasted. Don't mix wine and cognac... just a pro tip.
