Title: What graphics card for 10 bit color over display port and works with opengl?
Post by: Olumin on Sat, 05 November 2016, 16:13:53
I recently got myself a 10 bit, 2k, 27 inch screen which finally supports the adobeRGB colour spectrum for image editing with photoshop and lightroom, just to find out that my old, obsolete GTX 580 only supports up to 8 Bit colour over Display port (10 bit only with HDMI 1.3 or higher I think, and only works with directx). Adobe applications use Opengl. What ("affordable", below 600 EUR) graphics card supports 10 bit colour with DP and works with opengl as well as directx and has same or better performance then my old GTX 580?

Of cause it also has dvi and HDMI, but why would I use anything else then DP? I can only take advantage of the full AdobeRGB spectrum with DP. There is a reasn why all these expensive Nvidia quadro cards for professional graphics designers and video editors only have DP ports.

Have you tried modding the 580 to a quadro?  Not sure it does what you need but it's free so sounds worth a try.

I dont really know what that means, would you mind to explain?

Most high end workstation cards are nearly identical to a gaming model so all you do is trick your computer into thinking you bought one of them.  It's been 10 years since I last ran one (GeForce 6800->Quadro FX4000) but a quick search found this (http://www.gossamer-threads.com/lists/xen/users/292443) which suggests it's possible to mod a GTX580 to a 'Quadro 7000'.

It's easier to research these mods when the hardware is new and people are talking about them but I'm sure the info is out there, so if you can find what model quadro it converts to and this model does the fancy 10 bit colours you want I'm happy to help you search for what it involves.  The process used to be get the bios for your card (so the speed and memory size and timings are correct), change the device ID in nibitor (http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/nvidia_bios_editor_(nibitor).html) to quadro and flash it.  This looks to be an option as a random GTX580 bios opened just fine, but things might have moved on to less risky methods :))

You will have to search and check for yourself, but I don't think there is a cheap way out of this. Only the best of the best support 10 bit color depth, i.e. Tesla range cards.

Sure, almost any contemporary mid range card will offer 10b output, but none of that works in windowed mode. http://nvidia.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/3011/~/10-bit-per-color-support-on-nvidia-geforce-gpus

There are very affordable QUADRO GPU's, such as the QUADRO K420, which does support 10 bit with DP and also works with opengl. I was thinking about getting of of these to connect my montor to it, but using a regular geforce 1060 for everything else. Can I run a Geforce and quadro at the same time, perhaps with some clever software trickery? I'm pretty sure it works somehow.

Doesn't work with the GTX 580 sadly. Doesn't have a quadro equivalent.

The Quadro plex 7000 wont work sadly.
