Model F? It's a great board. It's not really usable in today's world, but still great. I prefer model m spacesaver.

Not just a model F, the legendary unsaver. Best board ever made. What do you mean by not usable? Im typing this message on my F XT, which is like 4 years older than the unsaver, and it is still perfectly usable.

I mean it has to be used like a 40%, it's cool to have and it's cool in general but it can be easy to not use it right.

Not sure what you mean. All keys on the unsaver are fully programmable and usable. I think that any model F can be used as a daily driver, as long as you or your colleagues don't mind the noise. Capacitive BS are tied for my favorite switch ever. If you've tried model M and not model F, you have no idea how much better model F is.

Your perfect board is remarkably different from mine.   :-X

Mine would be:
    • Modified ErgoDox layout
    • Monolith CNC aluminum split-hand case with built-in (fixed) tenting
    • 67g Zealios
    • Per-key RGB backlighting
    • Thick PBT/POM shine-thru caps with a decent legend
    • NKRO
    • USB C interface
    • LED lock and layer indicators

Thick shine through POM/PBT caps with decent legend, Function layers indicators (like the attempt by input club's ErgoDox)
Have these things ever existed at some point?

I think mine would be capacitive BS board in a VE.A layout with RGB back-lighting just because. I love alps, but C BS is the most refined clicky switch by a good margin.

that sounds pretty awesome.

The MF GB on DT is great since I really like the full size M the best, so a full size Model F will be amazing.  Also I prefer the plastic case to the 4704 cases they are too flat.

I really like alps tactile, so I should be trying oranges, but creams are really good too.  Will be building my VE.A with tactile alps

For linears, I love cherry.  I just sold my only ergo clear board, but I don't see myself building one.

I really don't like topre.

In summary:

Best BS board --> MF Full Size
Best Alps --> SKCM VE.A
Best Cherry --> Anything with old lubed switches like my 456GT, 360C (soon), Linger (soon)

We need some dye-sub Alps keycaps, that's what is holding me back. What are you talking about in reference to the MF GB on DT? Is that the same as the F62 and F77 GB?

Nah, I just like normal, fullsize layouts. But I don't really care about backlighting, and I think Cherry switches aren't very good. I much prefer the proper switches of old. I also think there are almost no great keycaps around anymore.

GMK does some good stuff and while EnjoyPBT and BSP do nice dyesubs, they don't really compare to the ones on some of the early IBM keyboards like the F XT. Those would be on my perfect board.

Exactly, the Model F-era PBT dyesub caps or the massive spherical doubleshots of old, they just don't exist anymore.

The Das Keyboard 4c does look relatively handsome; it just wouldn't do for me for quite a few reasons:

- Cherry mx switches (Prefer IBM Model F; Alps SKCM Blue, White, Orange; Topre 45 or 55g)
- ABS keycaps with surface-printed legends (Prefer dye-sublimated PBT or doubleshots)
- Legend font (Prefer Helvetica)
- Hardwired Fn key (Prefer no function key or one that can be remapped)
- Non-detachable cable (Prefer detachable cable)

Our community is quite diverse -- there are probably as many notions of the perfect keyboard as there are members!

Thick shine through POM/PBT caps with decent legend, Function layers indicators (like the attempt by input club's ErgoDox)
Have these things ever existed at some point?
Orion V2 has a row of LEDs that can be used for layer indicators.

I don't know if the perfect combination of POM, PBT, and a good font have ever come together to make the perfect shine-thru caps, but we're getting close.

Do you like any cherry switches?
Cherry mx and clones are my least favorite switches. However, I think what Cherry does best is the unfettered linear switch. One switch that I somewhat like is the Gateron Yellow --  it hits a sweet spot between mx Red and Black, but smoother.

Normal staggered split design, 65%, fully programmable, BT and usb-c wired usage, Topre switches.
