Title: What keycaps are these? (pictures attached)
Post by: Entropia on Wed, 30 November 2016, 14:12:05
I have seen a lot of photos of keyboards, mainly custom, 60%, etc. which have this kind of keycaps with a slightly rounded edges. I love how they look. Do these keycaps have any specific name? Any brand? Can they be installed on any mechanical keyboard? Oh, and is there any significant difference in typing, as regards precission, for instance, compared to more typical keycaps?

Some photos:

The profile is called SA

Signature Plastics has a handful of "profiles" including SA (see all their profiles here (http://keycapsdirect.com/key-caps.php)). SA keycaps are a very "retro" style of high-spherical keycap and many sets  (http://keypuller.com/profile/sa/)have been produced with the profile, and more all the time. So far, they have only been made for the Cherry MX switch type, to my knowledge, so you cannot install them on "any" mechanical keyboard, only a keyboard that uses Cherry MX style switches (be it Cherry or Gateron or Outemu or any of the various brands that produce the same switch shape).

Because they are "tall" some people feel that they're more wobbly to type on, but your mileage may vary depending on your keeb's specific switch. I've been using SA primarily for about a year now and I have no issues with typing precision or comfort.

They really suck for quick and light typing, and they were the product of the older generation when switches used to be tall and massive. You can basically find these in every computer terminal back in the day, and the retro look is what attracts so many people.

1. Danger Zone (https://www.massdrop.com/buy/danger-zone-sa-keycap-set?mode=guest_open) (SA uniform)
2. Round4 Round3 (https://deskthority.net/wiki/Round4_Round3) (DCS)
3. 1976 (https://www.massdrop.com/buy/nineteenseventysix-sa-keycap-set?mode=guest_open) (SA uniform)
4. MiTo Overcast (https://www.massdrop.com/buy/mito-dsa-sci-fi?mode=guest_open) (DSA)
5. Carbon (https://www.massdrop.com/buy/carbon?mode=guest_open) (SA sculpted)
6. Dolch (http://pimpmykeyboard.com/dsa-dolch-keycap-set?mode=guest_open) (DSA)
7. Pulse (https://www.massdrop.com/buy/pulse-sa-keycap-set?mode=guest_open) (SA sculpted)
8. Round4 SPH (https://deskthority.net/wiki/Round4_SPH) (SA sculpted)
9. Round4 SPH (https://deskthority.net/wiki/Round4_SPH) (SA sculpted)

These are all custom keycap group buys that have already ended. They are all double-shot legends which make them both desirable and expensive. These are all produced by signature plastics in varying profiles (SA, DSA, and DCS) (http://keycapsdirect.com/key-caps.php). They don't magically make you a better typist, they are mostly desired for their looks, and the longevity of double shot legends. They are cherry mx mount.

TLDR; they are all custom, double-shot keycap sets made by Signature Plastics (http://pimpmykeyboard.com/)

My mistake - I can never tell the different renditions of space cadet apart.

Well, one major clue is the fact that Round 6 keycaps have yet to be delivered to anyone. Those are old photos, which means they are photos of either Round 4 SPH or Symbiosis. Another clue is the incorrect size of the Shift keys, which were later corrected.
