There is no moisture in petroleum jelly or mineral oil, so I really don't see how that would act as a moisturiser.

Humectants are polar in origin and draw water in - that's not the case with these materials. It is technically possible to prevent water from escaping your skin by locking it in with a hydrophobic layer applied to your skin, but generally these materials are more used to make your skin more pliable rather than actually moisturising it. The term "moisturiser" is a classic example of an over-marketed term that's virtually lost its actual meaning and now basically means "something you put on your skin to achieve some form of effect". These materials do NOT add any moisture to your system so the term "moisturiser" is applied extremely misleadingly in this context.

Kiehl's Ultra Facial Cream is hands down the best face moisturizer on the market. Tried many brands and many products over the years and it's the best for the price.
