Title: How do you like your keyboard legs?
Post by: exia on Thu, 28 January 2010, 23:15:40
Do you type better with them flat or raised?

Lowered for me.  Raised would make it flat.  My brain exploded.

depends on the keyboard, I have my model m flat right now but had my 122 key raised as well as most other keyboards so it depends but I like them raised up more...I think I will raise my model m now lol

Only flip the legs if you know how to use them.

raised.

Raised. It's a hard habit to break after 15 years. I type with my wrists "floating" so it would require me to put more strain on them if I lowered the legs, which is fine for browsing or forum surfing, but anything more extended would hurt.

Varies with the wind direction and speed.

I can deal with anything but because I prefer to sit rather high relative to my mouse and keyboard I often prefer raised.

Whichever position makes the keyboard flatter.

Raised, and large like terminal keyboards should be.

If not, then make the keyboard flat.

It depends on which computer we're talking about. On some of my computers, the desk surface is damaged so it isn't flat anymore so I use the legs on the keyboard on that computer. On some others, they're flat.

I guess I won't vote since exia forgot a "Both" option, but I'm in no position to complain about bad polls when I make a "What's your favorite OS?" poll and include DOS and forget Windows 7.

I favor raised. However, it's been a long time since keyboards were properly designed to work at an incined angle, so that the stems of the keyswitches - and the movement of the key as it is pressed - are vertical when the keyboard is inclined.

I have an old reed switch keyboard which I am trying to dig up which illustrates this (the bases of the keyswitches are angled, so that they lean backwards on the PCB) as its beautiful cupped double-shot molded keys and so on belong in a mod project so that they can be in a keyboard that can be used today.

Well the poll questions really make no sense because an idiot made the poll.  Flat and raised are the same thing when you're asking how you like your keyboard legs.

The problem, exia, is that if the legs are raised the keyboard is flat whereas if the legs are flat the keyboard is STILL FLAT...

It's a question of semantics. When I flip a keyboard over and extend the legs I call it "flipping the legs up". From my point of view when I'm extending the legs, I am raising them.

I prefer my keyboards flat (legs retracted), by the way.

You can't call me an idiot since I already called YOU an idiot. You have to come back with a "moron" or a "stupidface."

Why do you guys have to start an argument over everything?

There's often no point to posting, otherwise.

I spent many bran cycles waking up trying to understand this one.

No one here flips the keyboard anymore to see the existence of legs, so "raised" keyboard legs are retracted. The keyboard legs could only help it sit "flat" when exposed, unless the keyboard is an amputee.

This poll assumes a keyboard having stable leg(s), so I voted the safe choice of "raised."

A better post would include multiple polls that essential determines your posture, all limbs' angles, and homerow key angle. Too tricky to measure/show, but side-profile pictures could suffice.  But I'm afraid fatman.jpg might show up.

Feet are raised, keyboard is flat:

Feet are half lowered, keyboard is half raised:

Flat, with wrist injuries in the past it's too uncomfortable to type with the legs raised. (for long periods of time, if it's not a very long session it's fine but I still prefer flat)

raising it so it leans backwards is also a good possibility, and as I'm playing with it right now I may grow to prefer it.

I usually prefer my keyboards to be flat if the surface is low; raised if the surface is high.

You're a genius. I'm not sure what kind of genius yet... maybe a comic genius or possibly an evil genius...

There has got to be some sort of achievement award for anyone able to inject Schrodinger's cat into a pointless keyboard feet hissy fit.

I prefer my keyboard legs retracted.  Additionally, I like to keep my keyboard low and to even have the keyboard declined (back of the keyboard lower than the front)...I find this extremely comfortable.

I gave that a shot on my Model M and it does in fact feel nice and comfy with the back higher than the front (although the trackball's not too easy to use). Good idea!

I tried raising the front of the board, and instant pain. Not incredible pain (That's my teeth causing that!), but that would hurt after more than about 5 minutes.

Like most things about my typing "Technique" (I use that word very very loosely), I am willing to bet it's ingrained in me to type with the feet raised. I have spent so long on an M with raised feet that I suspect anything other than gradual or minor deviations from this will be unwelcome and/or painful.
