thanks for the link but their shipping costs to Germany are beyond pathetic ...

Aiming at 2x 120 Silent MX Red (120US$) and the shipping is supposed to be 70$ (10-14 days)

LOL ... a 4kg keyboard from Korea is cheaper to express-ship to Germany (5-7 days)

How much quieter than plain Reds? contemplating a diy build

Just email their support and ask about shipping costs. Their website tends to over calculate international shipping charges.

You could also find someone to proxy for you.

I've asked before and they refused to use any cheaper service, because of liability or something.

/me shrugs

They won't be getting my money. Their loss. There are other vendors…

That's a little unfair to MK.  If you're already in Germany why can't you buy from the factory?

I'm not in Germany, and I don't think Cherry sells switches directly to individuals.

Sorry I was confused.  You say CZ but you were mentioning about costs to Germany; that's where I got confused.

I recently built a WhiteFox with these switches (which I had to tear out of a Corsair RGB) lol. Sigh..

It's probably illegal and highly unethical but I've always been curious if one could order a Corsair board, desolder/replace the switches with something cheap and then ship it back.

Even though I would never do this myself I have to wonder if anyone has tried it.

That keyboard is pretty hard to take apart. Multiple PCBs.

I was planning on putting other switches I had in it and using it as a spare keyboard, but breaking one of the PCBs on accident pretty much killed that plan.

I may very well try these for my next linear board. They sound a lot like Topre.

Something to keep in mind is that Cherry MX Red Silent feels a lot like Matias Quiet ALPS (since Cherry kind of copied the concept over anyway).

Only difference is one is linear one is tactile.  So if you like one you might like the others, conversely if you didn't like it then you probably won't like the other one either.

:P

I tried it with normal switches. They wobble like Parkinson.

Semi-related, and pardon my ignorance, but: is there even a reason to buy non-rgb switches anymore? They don't cost more and they're more flexible, but even if you don't want RGB it works the same, surely? Just don't understand.

These switches will not work with Gateron bodies as the Gateron bottom has extra plastic that hits the stem before the dampener can do its job. Therefore your downstroke would not be dampened but your upstroke will

My recommendation is to use Cherry MX bottoms paired with Gateron clear tops.

Are there any ratings in dB of these switches versus the plain Reds? I don't mind the volume of the Reds at all myself but I don't use them at work because they're way too loud.

I kind of feel that way about silenced switches. I don't see the point of making non-silenced switches anymore, whether we're talking about Topre, Cherry, or Matias. At least Matias doesn't really make a non-silenced switch anymore. The others should take their cue from Matias in this regard.

Have you tried doing it or just figure it will? Because I got some loose Silent Reds in the mail today, and experimented a bit and the downstroke seemed to be dampened using Gateron and Zealio switch bodies.
On a side note the silent red stem in a stock Gateron body(not clear) felt scratchier than stock Cherry, but the Zealio housing felt overall smoother and a smidge quieter.

I know due from a build I just did

However I've only tested it against the Gaterons with black bottom and clear top, the other variants of Gaterons and Zealios may be different.

Which Gateron are you using?

I used the frosted body old ones form the first GH groupbuy.

I use these stems in Zealio bottoms without any issues. Typing on them right now. I'm curious what issue you're talking about with Gateron bottoms. I've put these stems in black bottom Gaterons as well without any issues. I can still feel the dampers on them.

Here is a sound test I did of Gat reds vs Cherry silent stems(zealio bottoms)

Know that Gateron Black bottom are either "flat" like Zealios or they have molds. It really depends on which black bottoms you have. Most people don't build enough keyboards to come across both types of bottoms.

Nice video! I've been using silents for a couple months now and I don't think I can go back to stock MX stems.
The soft bottom-out feels so good compared to the harsh clack from standard MX switches, despite it being a bit scratchy. Also.. it sounds so good.

I would like to see a "combo" switch that ties things together: pink silencers && cherry silver/speed stem && nature white spring.

Thanks. I will say the worst part about silents are the springs they ship with. They felt crunchy and I assume this is where most people are feeling anything scratchy. For my build I used Zealio bottoms, Cherry RGB tops, Gateron Red springs and lubed them with Krytox 103. They are butter smooth and super quiet.

You can definitely hear ping noises from the spring, I think a little bit of lube on the springs should fix that though.

My final switch is probably gonna be gateron milk bottoms, cherry rgb tops, 65g springs, and techkeys thin mix of lube

They are lighter yeah but I wouldn't say way lighter. I really prefer light switches though. I used Gateron Clears for a while and enjoyed them. I also converted my HHKB to 35g and love it. So I'm a big fan of light switches.
