Title: Anyone preorder a Nintendo switch?
Post by: Halverson on Fri, 13 January 2017, 15:36:29
Title.

I was planning on it but didn't realize orders were up and gone before it was too late.

I did but I don't even have some other stuff paid off first. Figured it couldn't hurt when ordering from Amazon. Can always cancel.

Yeee! You go with grey or the colored one?

I was going to order one.. But the idea of flipping it and making a puny $200 seems like something I'd do when I was a kid.. So decided to hold off and let young people do that sort of thing.. hahahaha.

pre-ordered on amazon.. grey version!
I think it would have been a harder decision had they gone with a blue version and a red version, but the mixed colors seem a bit odd to me...

I'd like to see how it pans out. Personally I thought the WiiU was an ok design which could have done with some UI improvements. Hopefully the switch shows promise.

Yea, I love the colors but I'll just grab double sets of blue and red after.

Gray for now. Would prefer the colored controllers, but that's out of stock (gray wasn't when I ordered). I ordered a set of the colored controllers just in case.

I did the preorder at the Nintendo World store in NYC. Line was like 4 blocks long and it took hours. They didn't even let us preorder accessories or games. So I'll be camping out to get a LoZ:BotW Master set.

I'm just a little worried about building the system around mobile..

Because fewer and fewer kids play outside anymore....

I've never seen anyone play a wii-u outside in the wild either.. It's just too damn big..

You can't really use a Wii-U in the wild. The handheld needs to be kept pretty close to the main console to function.

As much as I want one, I'm gonna pass on pre-ordering until we see more titles for launch. Breath of Wild is looking nice, but I doubt it's going to be enough to keep my attention for long.

I meant outside as in outside (my house)..   and too big as in the controller being too big.. not too big as in you'd carry the whole wii u kit around with you. hahahaha.

I think the majority of us old guys are compelled by nostalgia more than anything else..

Because I've not sat down firm to play ANY games for at least 5 years. Yet I've purchased many of them..

Games arn't actually that fun for adults, when the there are so many options available , ones that pay money..

I can't really see gaming the same as I would when I was younger..  I see games now as something they should PAY ME to use..   what exactly do I GET out of playing games..

This is different from when I was younger, because it was either play games or Homework.. so... i mean hahahahahahaha.. games won that one..

Ya I'm going to order the colored ones but the store here had no other preorders except games and console. Going to look for Zelda limited edition, doubt I'll find one though.

This is the best option.

Computer for solo extreme gaming and online with friends around the world.

Switch for the games you(if you're around my age) grew up with and local gaming. I love gaming with my spouse and friends. It was only three nights ago I busted out the N64 for classic Mario kart and smash bros!

If you had to choose, just weigh out which of the two would bring you more joy, don't worry about anyone else :)

The question isn't whether you're going to get one. Of course you will get one! There is no thinking necessary.
It's whether you'll pre-order that's the itch.

I was intrigued when I heard the price point. It is more reasonable than I had expected... however, I am a very casual gamer-- who's most likely to game if I can do it on the go... that being said, I don't this Switch's mobile capabilities (at least at the get-go) will be enough to sway me. Really, only 3 hours of mobile gameplay with the new Zelda game? Meh... maybe they will release a "New" Switch in 2018 that will be more capable in the battery department...

I always wait for console revisions. The only exception was for the Wii; I had gotten the console when it still had GCN ports and compatibility, and I'm glad I didn't go for the Wii mini since it was a downgrade, rather than an upgraded revision.

Yeah. Hardware revisions are a given these days, especially with Nintendo. It's best to hold off if you're not a huge gamer that needs new systems/titles to play.

$60 a year for multi-player is an instant pass. Not going to pay the price of a brand new game to be able to play the games I already paid for. Was going to get one for splatoon 2, but ehhh.

Probably just pick up a gtx 11 series when they come out or something.

Absolutely. This looks like nintendo may have gotten stuff together after the 3DS, 2DS and WiiU. All three had some sort of issue, mostly promotion and sales. Worst case is I can sell it since there is going to apparently be a shortage in the US sine pre-orders are sold out in many places and people still wanting them. I canceled my pre-order for Sonic Mania on the XBO so that I could have it on the Switch and be portable.

Just watched a couple unboxing videos and the construction and sizing is really disappointing to where it actually looks like it would be painful to play for more than 30 minutes or so. The horrible kit-kat controller aside, everyone is saying the buttons are too small and close together. And who would take their $300 console out and about as if it were a DS?

I've been meaning to get one but I need to know what the rest of the library looks like before dropping cash like that on a 1-game product.

Here is a list of confirmed games.

http://www.ign.com/wikis/nintendo-switch/Nintendo_Switch_Games

Here are my initial impression on mine so far.

It's a bit large as a handheld, which is both good and bad. It will take a little getting use to it's size but that is no big deal.

The joycon are by far the thing most people are going to have issue with. They are small and the layout is far from optimal for playing. It is probably optimal for being able to be used in every configuration. For many single player games most people are going to want to shell out of the pro controller, or wait for some third party controllers. The small buttons and closeness of them will be an issue for those with larger hands or those use to a PS4 or XBO controller. When the joycon are in the grip or charging grip the IR camera is alway facing your genital area which I personally find disturbing.

Even though the Switch has a USB-C port that has video and sound when connected to my USB-C monitor it only charges the Switch and isn't recognized as being connected to external video. This is unfortunate as it means later you will have to buy some adapter to use on such displays or carry the base with you when you travel.

The launch day game offerings are slim, but there are many games on the way. Games are a personal choice so I wont go into any specific game but I will say that for most people the game offerings at launch are going to be very meager unless you are looking for the novelty games.

Performance wise the system is pretty much what you expect from and NV Tegra device. People have reported that the frame rate on Zelda drops occasionally and wether that is a software issue or performance issue remains to be seem. There have also been reports that one of the two (usually the left) joycon will stutter or disconnect for a second when in detached mode. Again that could be software or it could be performance and we have to wait to see how Nintendo addresses the issue. When connected with a charging grip or directly in handheld mode this is not an issue.

Currently there is also no way to backup your game saves either by copying them to the SD card or saving to the cloud. This is a big issue and I can only assume it will be addressed quickly by nintendo but again we have to wait and see. Which brings us to the network and online services. Currently the online service is absent aside from the eShop and some games with multiplayer. I did download FastRMX but have not tried the multiplayer yet. Nintendo was open that the online service wasn't ready and that is one of the reasons why everyone will be getting it free till later this year.

Some things to note, the Nvidia Shield which is almost identical spec wise to the switch is capable of 4k video but not gaming. It would be nice to see that added later. It would also be nice to see a Steam streaming client so you can stream steam games from you PC. That probably wont happen, but it would be nice. As has been well talked about there is no virtual console on the Switch yet so no playing older games like you can on the WiiU and 3DS. I do not know if Nintendo has said that that will be coming but I would imagine it is when the online services are fully up and running.

We do not know what continued availability of the system will be but it would be devastating to Nintendo if they let the same thing happen with the Switch supply chain as happened with the NES Classic that is still unavailable to most people. If you are not worried about availability and none of the current games interest you then waiting isn't a bad idea unless of course there are supply issues.

I originally wanted to preorder my Nintendo Switch but the preorder system in our area was closed due to low supply. I will get my hands on a Nintendo Switch after the supply has normalized (which will probably take a month or two from now).

Yes, depending on how fast they can crank them out. Unless your wanting to play Zelda, most of the other good games wont be out for a month or so anyway.
