The bonsai tree kits are awesome! A bit pricey, but the guy has complete build guides for all of the kits. Pretty awesome what people can do with Lego.

Actually thanks to this thread I looked in the last days into Lego stuff, and I have built some models with a 3D online tool: http://www.mecabricks.com/

And going to the Lego shop to buy some parts, it was of course not easy to get what I wanted to have... So I built some colorful not perfect things like a Raspberry case, cases for sensors, etc. Then I discovered Lego collectors, and they can build some models only because you need this and that part which was only available in a period of time :eek:

A friend turned me on to Brick Mania, pretty sweet stuff if you're a military/history buff.  They're located close, I'm going to have to check it out.

Looks surprisingly similar to the Tiger I by Cobi that I own :P
The quality of the bricks is actually really good (near that of normal Lego) and the tracks might actually be better than anything Lego has ever done.

I had a few LEGO sets as a kid, but they never really did it for me. The blocky pieces seemed too restrictive. As a kid, and even as an adult, I preferred things that could be as articulated as possible. (Maybe why I liked GI Joes so much.)
I had some K'Nex sets which I used to make my own action figures; was a blast.

But I acquired my second LEGO set in the past twenty years recently and I must say I am very impressed. Blocky they still are, but I was fascinated at how it all came together under my hands and how the pieces interacted with each other in the final result. Might have to pick up another set...

A while back, I was thinking of breaking out my tubs and tubs of Legos to build something neat.... I recently realized that it was Spring of 2008 when I thought that, and I still haven't taken the time to do it. I have so many Legos from the past that I can't really justify the price of a new set (I did buy a really small, ~$15 set about 5 years ago, that has since disappeared). The newer Lego stuff actually turns me off because it looks too complex and articulated (so the opposite of your issue) to the point that some of the sets barely look like Legos anymore. Did you ever play with Lego technic? It's quite a bit more articulate.

All that to say, I think this neat little computer may get me to break out my tubs of Legos finally.

These sets remind me of all the time I use to spend looking at the catalogs (Pick A Brick) and writing down the quantity and serial numbers of each piece I needed for what I wanted to make. Explaining to my folks why I needed the parts was always the most difficult part lol

I think the problem with the lego system as a whole, is they don't offer large enough sets for people to truly engineer..

They have the computer version, but that would only work for adults who are already dedicated..


If you want kids to be able to flourish with lego,  the quantity of parts necessary would be cost prohibitive for most parents given what lego currently charges for their sets..

They should bail out of the toy system entirely and go straight into engineering education..  lobby for state education contracts.. etc..

I'm sure tons of engineering firms would be glad to be onboard

Only if you buy it new. When I was little the main bulk of the Lego I received was from classifieds and yard sales and the like, either of existing sets or in large quantities of miscellaneous pieces. That way there's a lot more to experiment with.

I still have my old legos and bring them out for my daughter on occasion.  It seems like as a whole the Lego brand has really exploded in the last 10 years from where it was.  They've opened up as a company with the design software and being able to order your own bricks.  I recall hearing about them doing custom community-wanted brick design too.

I've been tempted to buy some of the sweeter large Star Wars sets and some of the military stuff, but at the end of the day I think Lego is too limiting of a medium for engineering skills and as a creative outlet for me.  I'd rather shell out dough on other projects.

AFAIK ordering individual bricks from LEGO has been a thing since 1992. I have no idea how I was able to get my little grubby kid paws on one of those catalogs though

Individual parts can be pricey. I buy parts only to customize little minifigures.

Nice ones. I do like small scale interpretations where every piece is like a broad dab in an impressionist painting, giving you just enough detail to visualize the original.
