Title: Crayola, 14 year old pencils..
Post by: tp4tissue on Wed, 01 February 2017, 16:12:20
Crayola, held up ok, violet is a bit dryish, or maybe it was always dry..

Have heard that ghetto pencil sets like these have less consistent lead texture vs the super xpensive Japan weeaboo pencils.

NO, tp4 no can fordz super xpensive color pencils for comparison testing..  [attachimg=2]

Growing up I never had Crayola crayons. We always got the cheap ones from Walmart. Never knew what the fuss was, really.
With my kid we got her some Crayola crayons and, after having colored with her using several different crayon brands, Crayolas are definitely the best I've used. The color saturates onto the page vibrantly, doesn't flake, and the consistency of the crayon lasts a while.

She recently got a kit with some pencils. I'll have to try them out as well.

I once tried to find a working pen in a stationary cabinet that had clearly been stocked and forgotten about in the 90s, not a single pen or marker would work. I can't believe that someone would just forget about a stationary cabinet for 15-20 odd years. But that is what happens where your office is old as ****, with a really high turnover of slaves where no one gives a **** therefore no one has a need for a marker because labeling stuff is effort.

Coloured pencils used to always infuriate me. Drop your box even once and sometimes the lead inside just shatters, so every time you attempt to sharpen it, your new sharp tip just falls out right away as soon as you apply any kind of pressure. I swear I have sharpened entire pencils from brand new down to a nub without even being able to use them. Even if you don't drop them, the lead is sometimes shattered inside right off the shelf. And now you have to colour your banana blue because you no longer have a yellow pencil.

I still have like $1k worth of art supplies from college that now is sitting in the shed covered in spiders never to be used ever again by me. The good thing about that stuff is most of it will keep forever.

THIS!
I wont believe Crayola is blesses by the lord Bob Ross until The whole thing has been used.

:( This thread has me thinking of how much unused supplies go straight to the landfill *sigh*

One of my students had this set and although the book style case was really inconvenient for grabbing different colors or shades. The pencils themselves were really nice and sharpened very easily/evenly.

Word on the block is the vintage black pencils are smoother.

I think (the real) art people shelve the packaging for the irojiten,  and put them in a tube, or a pencil bag..

In Australia the term "shelve" means to stick up ones ass (probably came from United States though).

The internet is abuzz with reviews of the OLDER prismacolor being superior to the NEW prismacolor,  of which --quality-- has gone down hill..  Although unlike vintage black,  this is a verified fact, they are indeed now worse..

You can compare force curves, at least:
https://plot.ly/~haata/72
https://plot.ly/~haata/266/cherry-vintage-mx-black/

vintage black is smoother, you can tell by looking at that. All things considered though, I can't really say cause I've touched neither an mx black or a vintage black.

/// Updated with Closeup of pencil strokes..

Crayola has enough softness for small sample writings, but overall, still too hard to practice with..

Ideally for Expressive pencil writing,  3B hardness provides good line weight variation without being too soft like 5B-6B

The main drawback to pencils, is that you can not perfectly predict where the stroke will end because the core is not of uniform density, it should be but it isn't always.

What happens is,  if one segment of the core is too hard, and that is where your stroke ends,  that stroke would end Shorter than where you intended, compared to your other strokes.

So if you look at my character for (light blue, 青), the second horizontal stroke ended before the indentation into the paper.

And if we go from a Dense segment into a Loose segment, you get too wide a stroke,  Looking at the Vertical stroke on the (orange,橙) character, the middle of the stroke is too wide.

--Of course, since this is HAND writing-- and not Photoshop,  Perfection is not the end game..

What you're looking for in a Defining Piece (should you ever attempt one) is an alignment of good odds, and persistence.

Which is why there is an element of GOD in art, because no one person/ artist is in complete control of the outcome.
