Title: Has anyone heard of these key covers that reduce sound?
Post by: dantan on Wed, 08 February 2017, 08:31:03

I'm just wondering if these are any good. The price is ok but I just don't know how these work for different switch types.

They only work on plateless boards, which eliminates 90% of modern keyboards. Other than that, I've heard they work pretty well.

Be wary of compatibility! First of all, QMX-Clips don't work with plates.

Both types of clips (QMX-Clips and Zealencios) are designed for keycaps in Cherry profile with switches oriented with the LED-window facing south.

They are not compatible with thick Cherry keycaps on switches with the LED-window north (Cherry logo upside down) because of the thickness of the bracket. This rules out thick keycaps on a great many keyboards, including almost every one with backlighting.

They are not compatible with clicky Cherry MX, Greetech (some Razer) switches because those have sliders with a small protrusion that gets in the way. Clicky Gateron switches work.
Kailh-made switches (some Razer) don't work because those have different housings.

They were made for Cherry profile with the struts it has inside the keycap being relatively close to the switch housing. OEM-profile would need a additional thin O-ring of some kind. SA, DCS and maybe also DSA profiles are unsuitable because they don't have any struts (in every key) and at the very least you would need to place a stack of O-rings inside each keycap to get any effect.

But if they work for you, then they are great!

BTW. The QMX-clips are available also on Uniqey's web site and could ship faster from there.
However, they don't ship to every country: only German-speaking countries, UK, USA and Canada. And only in Germany would it be cheaper to buy a pack from Uniqey directly instead of going through Massdrop.
(I got mine through a proxy. If my proxy read this, Thanks Again!)

Cherry needs to properly (i.e., internally) silence their entire switch line, as they have done with their silent reds/blacks. All these aftermarket gimmicks are a waste of time, effort, and money for 99% of users.

Wow. Based on what has been said here, these key covers are really incompatible with almost everything and under almost all conditions.

There is nothing more silent than a keyboard with uniqey clips. Prove me wrong.

I assure you lubed and silenced topre beats it everyday. I had both side by side.

But their silencing prowess isn't the issue here it is simply that they are not very compatible.

Topre not programmable, and not split layout. The options are very restricted. And super expensive. I can't afford.

I got myself some cheap silicone O-rings for about 4€. (Mainly to use in my Cherry MX-Board 3.0 with Brown Keys at work.)
Just tested them on one key so far, reduced the noise on my Blue Keys at home fairly.

I'm wondering if it's worth to spend that much money on the ones you posted? Guess some kind of review would be good to have.

The uniqey silencing clips by uniqey are very good. There are some sound comparisons on youtube. Please let me know if you can't find them.

BTW, I updated the Damping (https://deskthority.net/wiki/Damping) article on the Deskthority Wiki. It contains some alternatives to silencing clips but I'm sure that there are lots more.
