I was wondering if anybody had any experience with having keys laser etched from IKBS (International Keyboard Solutions) in NYC?
I just spoke to them on the phone and they quoted me a price of $55 to red laser etch the alpha-numeric chars on my korean topre 86(whichever model).
I love this keyboard and I love that it's black. I'm a pretty decent touch typist for most keys but hunting for numbers/symbols is killing me with this board since I can't simply look down and find the key I want when I get lost. This is especially troublesome using vi, which I do a lot.
I'd simply like them to red etch over the existing black lettering. Does this sound plausible? I don't want to destroy my $200 keyboard.

Looking at their foreign language service, though, it appears that the etch the bottom-right of the key. If that is the case, it shouldn't interfere with the existing legends. The "foreign language" legends would just be those of the US ANSI layout.

Hmm... It's hard to tell if he can't read the letters because of the language or that it's black-on-black (or both). I guess it really doesn't matter. I didn't pay too much attention to the details of the post. I just focused on if IKBS was a good company or not. Their website is very Unicomp-esque, so take that for what it's worth.

yeah what I want them to do is etch over the english legend in the top left and leave the korean dark. I don't care too much if the fonts don't match up exactly. I just need to be able to see the numbers/symbols primarily.
I'll post pictures after its done so you guys can see...

Wait, I thought you were a English Major?
History. I'm also a Data Analyst, so I skip over the unnecessary details and focus on the main question, so I didn't really pay too much attention to why he couldn't read the caps. Are you going to check out the "Cinecast" of a Prarie Home Companion this weekend (IIRC)?

I'll probably skip it. I like the skits, but I am not a big fan of the music.

Go for it and post pics.
Other idea would be to buy blanks first and then have them etch it like the KBC keys.
Question is, can they work with a set of blanks? That might be an option for some of us who want the holy grail of white-on-black IBM keys w/o the M13 attached to them.
I'd not mind knowing how it ends up since this would have similar implications for what I'm wanting.

As blank keys and laser etching is an order of magnitude cheaper than most other options for a custom set of keys, I would be interested in how it turns out.

an oder of magnitude
Does a 10-day old corpse reek an odor of magnitude more than a recently deceased one?

I would think so...
