Title: Lefties: Any HHKB problems?
Post by: macguy80 on Sat, 04 March 2017, 02:54:12
Does the HHKB layout give you problems, specifically with the location of Fn? Thanks :)

The Hasu controller is a dream for situations like this :P. I need to start stocking up a few of them just in case he stops making them and I lose my only one lol. On the other hand, I've seen lefties use HHKB stock with no problems. I've heard it helps reducing the key travel (o rings?) on the fn key should you feel your right pinky too tired.

Thanks for that bit of advice! I'll have to look into the Hasu.

60%s tend to be really good for lefties, at least my mom says so

I'm a lefty and I don't have any problem with the fn key on my hhkb.

You use two hands on the keyboard, yes?

I'm a righty, but use the mouse lefty (first pc I ever used in the 80s was set up this way, and it just stuck) and I have no problem with far right function keys.

The single Fn key on ANSI HHKB Pro is terrible, regardless of ones dominant hand. For example, I find it nearly impossible to press combos like Ctrl-F8 (=Ctrl-Fn-8), and I have ± average hands.

There's a DIP switch, that remaps the left Super key to Fn, but then you lose that Super key… The HHKB Lite layout (w/ an extra Fn key below left Shift) is so much better in this regard.

That said, the original HHKB layout didn't have _any_ Fn key at all (and Meta instead). No big deal, if you use only *nix shell, but most people don't do that.

Personally, I'd rather get a HHKB JP w/ hasu's replacement controller—because the big "ANSI" spacebar is a waste, and I'd rather make my own layers with more stuff than just arrow, nav and Fx keys.
