The wife has an electric heating pad that has an auto shutoff. We've had that thing for almost 6 years now and no noticeable issues with it yet. She turns it on and almost immediately falls asleep with it. A couple of months out of every year like that.

A blanket might be a completely different story though. Maybe it has to do with storage and the filaments breaking and shorting in it, or whatever is in there to make it heat up.

I remember those little rubber pouches that you'd fill with boiling water.. this is similar.. hahahaha
