I imagine it depends on the quality and manufacturer.
The wife has an electric heating pad that has an auto shutoff. We've had that thing for almost 6 years now and no noticeable issues with it yet. She turns it on and almost immediately falls asleep with it. A couple of months out of every year like that.
A blanket might be a completely different story though. Maybe it has to do with storage and the filaments breaking and shorting in it, or whatever is in there to make it heat up.

I've used these many times over the years as mattress toppers at home and for putting on an air mattress while camping. No problems and they haven't been expensive brands (Licensed NHL team logos) I imagine anything could happen tho fire wise

i've been using one(actually 2 ones a backup) for years... plenty of coffee stains yet no explosions :thumb: :thumb:

electric blankets are high tech now, you can even wash it in the washing machine, no issues, just don't put in dryer cuz plastic will melt.

I use something better that won't catch on fire. They are called warm rice bags. (http://www.instructables.com/id/Warm-Rice-Bag/) Pretty cheap and easy to make with a sewing machine. They keep me nice and warm at night.

i could never do that to rice
