Title: 62g Ergoclear -> Topre: 45g or 55g?
Post by: bmilcs on Tue, 07 March 2017, 05:36:22
Hey folks,

I am looking to convert to Topre. I am torn between 45g and 55g, leaning towards 55. Would 55g be closer to my beloved 62g Ergos & Zealios?

What would you suggest? I am on the keyboard all day long, working and typing along.

Having all three in front of me, 45g (HHKB specifically) is definitely closer to 62g Ergo Clears than 55g. That being said, I personally prefer the feels of 55g (Realforce) over 45g. I've used it as a work keyboard and have had no issues going through a whole day with the 55g. I daily drive my HHKB, and that's even easier on the hands IMO.

I don't have a 55g board so I can't speak for that but having gotten 2 45g uniform boards I can tell you that 45 feels a tad heavier than 62g clears. It took me about a day to grow on, and now I really like it. The tactility is more noticeable and less rough than clears and it's really great to type on. I'd be hesitant to go for 55g without trying it because of how 45g feels, however. The best way to be sure is to try it for yourself, unfortunately that's just not a thing you can do a lot of the time.

Dang really? I was on the HHKB tour several months back and already forget the true feel lol. I was too sold on my fresh Ergos at the time to experience it subjectively.

Can I get a redo? :P

Did you guys use 62g Korean 24k springs? SPRiT?

Korean springs are measured at bottom out so while I don't know exactly what the 62g Ergo Clear bump requires for actuation, for sure the initial force for Ergo Clears is lower than Topre...so you don't get that momentum going and why 45g Topre will feel slightly heavier (IMO) than 62g Ergo Clears...

55g Topre will feel significantly heavier and probably not the way you want to go if you're looking for a similar experience to your 62g Ergo...

most people seem to prefer 55g topre over 45g, but i'm an outlier and like 45g over 55g

it's just preference, i say get a 55g board and see how it makes you feel
