Title: Use for my Alps Oranges?
Post by: _rubik on Mon, 20 March 2017, 09:05:41
So recently I came across a couple aek and aekiis, so I stripped the grimy aek for its buttery alps orange and cleaned up the caps. I was going to use them for an AEK Clue, but seeing as the clue store has very little matias/alps support at the moment, I'm considering another build. Any ideas GH?!

Edit: I have enough 60% to make the world go round. I was thinking something around a 66 or 75.

I heard you can mod Alps Oranges to make better, more tactile feeling Alps Blues. Just a thing you might want to consider doing :thumb:

I actually did a Clueboard using Alps Oranges. It's great.

If you don't want a 60% you'll either have to hand-wire something or desolder/replace the switches on another board I think.

I recently bought a KBP V80 w/ Fuhua switches and replaced them with orange alps. They feel great but sound so amazing, nothing thocks quite like it IMO (but I haven't tried many alps).

Only major issue with doing a more 'non-standard' build is obviously going to be sourcing keycaps, since it's hard enough to get good ones for Alps normally let alone weirder layouts. Might require some re-purposing.

Did you do it without a plate? Also, what does your R1 look like? So many questions...

Yea, I would love to know this as well!

I used an acrylic plate and standard AEK bottom row. Will post a pic when I get the case.

I made a clue with alps oranges as well. My worst build ever, I got in on the 2nd round of PCBs so none of the under lighting was pre-soldered, didn't do well on the surface mount leds lol.

But yes, there's always hasu's 60% boards, an infinity kit if you can get a hold of one, and just retrofitting an old alps based board.

I'm honestly not one for lighting, and I got a revision 2 board. As far as I'm concerned, I love the layout and am a fan of the switches. Can't see it going too wrong.

A Matias Click leaf would probably be great in orange Alps housings.

I wonder how much of the Matias Click and Alps Orange are interchangeable?

A really nice combo could be the Matias Click leaf + clear top housing, with the Alps Orange stem and internals..
