Title: Is a Model M2 for 30 bucks a good deal?
Post by: Cromosoma on Wed, 22 March 2017, 12:00:42
Hi, new member here :D
Just wanted to know for how much are Model M2s going on right now.
I just found one for 30 bucks and seems in pretty good condition, neither the keycaps or the body are yellowed.
I'll link some photos of the ad, though they are not in a really good quality: http://imgur.com/gallery/8cXSW (http://imgur.com/gallery/8cXSW)

No. You can find an M for the same price if not slightly more.
Every single one I've seen passed atleast the $25 mark. Where do you find those Ms at such good prices?

$30 including shipping is a fair deal if it's in good shape and it works.

It might not work. M2's are notorious for failing. Although it can apparently be easily fixed by replacing a few of the capacitors on the controller.

If it works, then worth it including shipping. When M2's sit unused for a few years, the capacitors could fail. There have been M2's that had been taken out of unopened boxes and did not work.
It could be repaired but it is difficult to open - it is held together with lots of snaps, and it is almost impossible not to snap one off by mistake. You would also need to be careful with all the loose buckling springs, and be careful when putting the keys back so that you don't squash a spring against the edge of its barrel.

BTW, the keys are not contoured and it is a louder keyboard than the regular Model M. Only the buckling spring modules inside are interchangeable with the classic Model M.
