seems to be a very popular keyboard with geekhackers. Is it just a very cheap way to get cherry brown switches?

Yes, the Compaq 11800 has brown cherries. And is cheap if you live in USA.

Compaq G80-11802 also has Cherry browns (and trackball). Couldn't resist the $15 price @ local shop. I just have to clean it and sell it before the wife notices.

Oh, she can't track my keyboards. Joint bank accounts expose my lack of discipline.

pFink won it.

It just seems to me that more people would get a Cherry MX8100 if since you get Nkey AND Cherry Browns - what more people are looking for in a gaming board.  I'd ignore the trackpad.

This USB NIB one for $60 (http://cgi.ebay.com/New-Cherry-Credit-Card-KeyBoard-POS-USB-MX8100-MX-8100_W0QQitemZ180467245134QQcmdZViewItemQQptZPCA_Mice_Trackballs?hash=item2a04afa04e) is tempting but I'd email the seller and ask for a product code and ask him/her to pop a switch.  If for some reason it has double shots you've won the lottery since it has a Dome Windows key, perhaps the first Double Shot Windows key spotted in the wild.

If that's a double shot Windows key...  I want it!  I wish there was an easy way to tell.  That keys looks exactly like the one that came on my G80-3000LSCRC though.  It also appears to have a small ~ key which matches my lasered ones also.  If you email the seller post back what you find out please.

I'm rapidly becoming addicted to Cherrys and anything with double shot keys... Eeeekkkk!

MX8100 is too wide, the PCB flexes too much.  Not great for typing, can't keep your mouse near midline.  It would be good for gaming if you didn't mind the width of the board.  This board needs modiications to stiffen the PCB to make it good for typing.  I gave mine away.  Oh yeah the layout is weird too.  The MX8100 I had (with normal style enter key) had lasered keys.

Asked Seller what the label says. His response:

Mode II MX 8100 USB
Article No: multiboard G80-8963LUBUS-2 /04
Serial No: G 000248 3U25

That's MX Black and Lasered Keys if I'm reading the Default Dating Cherry Keyboards wiki article correctly (and if Cherry decided to be consistent that week).
