I've seen murmurings from old posts and imgur pictures. It seems like the VA68 Case can fit an AEK bottom row nicely. What's the scoop here? Has anyone built one?

I bought one built by another member. /u/ca178858 has built PCBs and Plates that are compatible, then you can buy a VA68M kit (w/ Aluminum case) off Taobao for about $80-90
So it requires a custom plate (for the Alps stabilizers and Alps switch cut-outs), as well as the custom PCB (for Alps pins).

Could you elaborate on the PCB. I haven't seen one circulating. Does someone here have the design files, or was there an old GB.

The member /u/ca178858 on reddit designs/builds them. I don't think he's sharing the files yet.
Here's (https://www.reddit.com/r/mechmarket/comments/5w0sz2/usva_h_custom_6878k_pcbsplates_support_both_alps/) where he is selling his old stock, but I know he's doing another run (https://www.reddit.com/r/MechanicalKeyboards/comments/5wwe9r/ic_alps_compatible_ansiiso_pcbplate_for_va68m_and/) soon.
He doesn't do GBs, just orders stock and buys more when it runs low.
