Title: External display unbearable slow on late 2010 MBP (Nvidia GT 330M 512MB)

Anybody an idea? Since 1-1.5 year or so my Late 2010 MacBook Pro with NVIDIA GT 330M 512MB becomes UNUSABLE (lagging cursor, lagging processor calculations in CPU/GPU-intensive apps like R, SPSS, Illustrator, Lightroom; even Word unusable) and quite HOT, fans spinning to the MAX when I attach an external monitor.

From the get I have always had a 24 or 27" monitor attached via DISPLAYPORT.

Two months ago, GPU-related kernel panics started to occur (GPU stack dump and panic state in dmesg on reboot).

I only noticed the lag because I built a desktop PC and only then did I realize how slow my MBP was.

Any idea what the technical issue is here? It's now 6 years and 6 months old. When I do not attach an external screen, it's mostly fine, weirdly enough. Even when the dGPU is in use.
