I'm casually looking at oldskool demos from Revision 2017 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=veWqxkTFs5w) on Youtube but everything is not good enough to get all my attention. So I browse something in another window at the same time.

I was active in the demo scene (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demoscene) when I was a teenager in the early-mid '90s. I never did anything remotely noteworthy but it taught me how to code.
For many of us at the time the goal was to get into game development later on, and indeed many game development studios have been staffed by people with their roots in the demo scene of that time.
Those who are still in it now would be the hardcore who are still hanging on to old memories of their youth
... but some are also producing some awesome ****. Programming in machine language, direct to the hardware, sometimes doing self-modifying code or using known unofficial hardware features on very limited hardware. There is something very beautiful in that. That is why I like programming on AVR now.

There's nothing I should be doing I have the day off.
That's why I'm here.
I enjoy browsing GeekHack and replying to a couple threads here and there.
Expanding my knowledge, seeing what the Artisans are up to. There's plenty to do here and I can spend hours just reading and replying. :D

Yeah because I have to design a study to measure it empirically, then anal-yze the data, replicate my study, and then write and rewrite 20 times, then submit. Reject. Submit-reject 3 times. Then revise-resubmit. Probably collect additional data. Reject: data not strong enough. Another journal, R&R. Conditional accept. Too late, somebody else did something close. Accepted but somebody else was first, got cited more already.
Why did I do science again?

Well for one reason..
Rich females will only stay with a Less affluent male if the male's occupation has societal cachet..
So, an educated , a well documented man... is the only type which can score wealthy females in modern society without significant personal wealth..

Good thinking, that's probably true. Oh, and job security I guess? That's one thing that's relatively easy to get here in the Netherlands. It's more that there are few ambitious new youngling researchers out there, so it is not so difficult to stand out if you walk the extra mile. That said, resources to be successful are scarce, so are job positions.
