Title: In a perfect world, what career would you have chosen?
Post by: iLLucionist on Wed, 26 April 2017, 02:53:34
Programmer, hands down. Math was not good enough, so I started law school. Hated it. So went for psychology. All of a sudden, I turned out to be a natural in statistics after all. Now regret.

What career would you have chosen if you could do it over again? Pimp? Engineer? Full time mom? IT?

I would skipped a career and been born with rich parents. I would have spent my short life blowing engines in various WRXs, snorting coke and surrounding myself by expensive hookers... dying at the tender age of 25 partly due to my massive drug addiction, partly due to the multiple STDs but mostly because  I crashed my brand new STI into a lamp post.

One can only dream....

hahaha..

Living in the first world, you are already guaranteed a living as long as you're willing to do ANYTHING at all..

If you define your world by what you want, be it , want to do or want to have..   Then you are at the fundamental level giving control to the people who already have command of resources..

Typical humans are driven by drugs / sex / and alcohol..   The older generation of influence are already in position to provide you those things far cheaper than you can produce on your own,   IN EXCHANGE for your life-on-earth, to maintain, yet their own pointless existence..

It's more productive to think of the larger collective goal, where you'd like to see humanity move and go..

Well...
Currently working as a programmer, a profession I've schooled myself since maybe 93-94 since I was a kid.
So you can say I'm working my "dream job".

But as the time passes, I miss working with my hands, and more manual work.

I would like to be able to live nicely working as car shop for restoring vintage oldtimer cars and motorcycles.
Or even carpentry. But alas, that kind of profession is not paid well here. So I'm sticking to programming.

In a perfect world, I'd work my dream job of being a privateer with my own crew and decommissioned subs, hunting off the African coast or so.

When I was 7-10 years old, I wanted to build an armored suit for myself that filtered my blood and intestines so that I wouldn't even have to take it off to go to the bathroom. Additionally, I wanted to build battlemechs from the Battletech/Mechwarrior universe and take over the world with them. The closest thing I could think of to get me there was mechanical engineering or robotics, but I didn't pursue those when I got older for some reason (probably because of math).

Around age 13, I started to study German. I wanted to be a translator and/or interpreter. This passion carried through to college, and I started as a German major. I figured I'd add more languages down the road (I was a novice at French and knew a few sentences in Russian and Japanese). Then I learnt that it's really necessary to major in something else as a translator because translators need specialized knowledge in an industry, so I dropped the German major. After screwing around in science for a year, I settled on an MIS degree. Now I work in software support and hate it.

I wish I'd either gone down the mechanical engineering or robotics path or continued down the language path. As I got older, I just wanted to find something easy that I knew I could do and get a job. Now I regret my haste and feel stuck doing what I'm doing because of current life circumstances.

If I was to play this game I'd probably say electrical & mechanical engineer. I even wrote to LEGO to see about designing sets for them back in the days.

or...

The professional sport route; professional skateboarder with a shoe deal, a Superbowl ad spot, and a Gleaming The Cube II movie deal. Nothin' fancy.

I would have stayed in IT but would have tried to get into mainframes/mini computers (ie as/400 & i-series.)

My first job determined my career path which has mostly been data processing for the graphic arts industry.  I hear there are still a lot of jobs for legacy systems though not quite as many as say javascript/c#.  Despite the complaints of programmers retiring and/or dying they all still expect 10+ years of experience which makes breaking into that area challenging.

Just as there are so few asian american female pr0n stars.

It's considered shameful, but especially so in asian society.

It's obviously prostitution whether or not it's filmed..

Typically asian americans have no trouble acquiring and holding down jobs more profitable and less "socially damning" than pr0n star

The majority of female performers in pr0n are on the bottom rung of society,  trailer park, little or no education, poverty line families..

US, typically do not let people into the country from asia without a bachelors degree, so in general, we don't see men or women go that low as to need the types of desperate income.

But of course as we move forward.. as asian americans become influenced by drug culture after several generations,  there should be a normalizing of races..

So, basically ,  at the most current,  There are more poor white people than poor asian people in america by a significant amount.

Haha. Not even the NSA has enough memory to run ZFS though. How many RAM would you need to store all people info on ZFS volumes. INSANE amounts.

I like the idea of making indie games. Tried to do an IT degree when I was 18 but I couldn't handle the maths. In retrospect I wish I'd gone to art college and put lots of time into game maker.

Now I'm a building services engineer and while I found the degree tedious the work is satisfying to me so I'm happy enough.

the only monsters of our society are other humans..

in many ways they're like dragons, powerful, almost untouchable,  yet they are made of flesh, their one weakness.

However they live in gated communities much like a castle or a layer..

hahahahhahaha...  I think people who wrote these fantasy stories were also talking about people..

Bears are monsters. Sharks are monsters too. Alligators are mini dragons. Let's have some Mountain Dew.

I am going off to college next fall and I am not sure of what I want to do...

I was thinking engineering, but I don't want to end up sitting in a cubicle every day for the rest of my life.

do engineering, but consider an mba after you get some industry experience..

go into semiconductor and math oriented fields..

There is no guarantee of jobs in anything else, because the stupid people flood those fields.

If you do math, you will ALWAYS have a job.. at the very worst, you can get paid 50,000-80,000  teaching highschool math..

You know... I was very bad in math when I was 18 when I need to make the choice. Looking back, a bit algebra and calculus wouldn't have hurt. If I would've put the energy in, I would've made it. Because I already programmed in most languages, knew of software engineering, testing, design patterns, anti-patterns. I knew object-oriented, functional, etc. The only thing missing was an academic underpinning, persistence, and math. I would've made it.

I think IT puts too much emphasis on math. Now on the other hand, I must also admit that when I read some IT academic papers sometimes the math gets too much for me. So for very theoretical work, I think IT doesn't even cut it but you just need to study math instead.

I guess you always end up in a cubicle if your pay grade / position is too low. PhD candidates supposedly are "intellectualists" yet in the US you find PhD's in rooms like server rooms with no windows, 6 -10 in a small room, even if it's Stanford. WTF

For one, you have to keep up with those insecure ego competitive math nerds who always want to demonstrate that they are smarter than you. I couldn't take it.

On the upside, math really gets you anywhere, even into economics and stock trading. I cannot think of one field where math is not required. Yeah ok.. history and arts perhaps.

It's funny I did maths, applied maths and physics for my leaving certificate (Irish equivalent of high school) and did pretty well in all of them. The only bit I was bad at was calculus, which was optional on the test. Then I went to third level and in both courses I did it was nearly entirely calculus the whole way through. I could understand it alright just that I've got a sieve of a memory so I had to do everything 300 times to reproduce it in an exam situation. I was failing my final maths exam over and over every year until they split it up into 3 tests then I got 85% purely cos my ability to memorise it in smaller chunks was a lot better.
