Title: Realforce Silent Sliders Mini Buy
Post by: Air tree on Fri, 28 April 2017, 06:52:32
Hey guys, I'm trying to gauge interest/find people to join in on splitting the costs of buying a few 104u silent realforce boards to split out the sliders. Once the sliders were harvested everyone would send in their old sliders to put in the 104u to recoup the cost for all of us.

There are white 104u's on amazon.jp for $200 each shipped to the US.

I'm not planning this being huge, but I could expand a bit, depending on the interest.

It would depend on everyone coordinating with sending their old sliders so I could or someone else takes apart the 104u's and puts them back to together with the regular sliders, as that is a large part of recouping the cost for everybody.

It depends on the volume, but just for 5 people to get x60 each, it would cost $118 upfront and then getting money returned after the boards are resold.

I would be interested, but how would it work if people have HHKBs, 87u's, etc.

I would presume it's only for people wanting 62 sliders (enough for a HHKB). If you want enough for a 87u, then just buy a silenced one yourself.

Oh, okay then. I won't bother this IC anymore.

Depending on the numbers and how many people are interested, some people with 87u's could be included, just depends on the number of people.

Interested somehow.

Just a question though, how's the comparison? This sliders on HHKB and straight HHKB Type-S?

The RF purple slider are longer to compensate for the loss in key travel by the silencing rings.

And to everybody, this will be moving forward after I get my new PC set up and I get everything settled, AKA in a week or two. I'll add up how many people we have and the optimum amount of boards needed to satisfy the slider needs of everybody!

Not to discourage you guys, but with the back and forth shipping + small donation for the guy organizing everything, you'll each save $20 at best (with $10-15 being more realistic) while having to deal with being in a group buy and not being able to handle the sliders yourself.  The main benefit would be the lower buy-in cost, which you already calculated to be around half compared to doing it all yourself.  I do wish you luck if it happens, I almost participated in a similar idea on reddit but ended up doing it myself.  Silencing topre is so worth it.

I'm going to try and do everything at cost and try to keep the price overall for every as low as possible.

I guess one benefit is that there is a low amount of work for others, since I'll be taking apart and putting everything together plus selling the boards.

And we can use really low cost shipping to get everything around, since the weight is so low and small.

I have experience buying the 108JS and was able to sell the keycaps and uniform 45g domes as well as my spare sliders (44 1u + 4 2u on top of the full 58 1u + 2 2u harvested for my HHKB), and this was a very reasonable endeavor.  I made almost all of my money back and the caps were way cooler than the 104's.

They go on any keyboard, there are no compatibility concerns for any participant here.  There are only 1u and 2u stabs - the ISO enter stab/slider is just a vertically oriented 2u (and can be put anywhere 2u, accordingly).

This might be interesting... how do the sliders compare to landing pads or hyperspheres? I'd also be interested in this sort of approach, but for harvesting 55g domes

Would totally be down to participate in this. Been looking for some purple sliders and this seems like a great idea.

Please count me in on this as well. I couldn't deal with the reduced travel from other methods and this seems to be the solution.

From what I have found, it appears purple sliders do reduce travel distance... but it is very, very minimal. It has to do with the dimple underneath and the height difference. From what I see on websites offering silenced RF's the travel distance is reduced from 4mm to 3.8mm.

Silenced RF 104U: https://elitekeyboards.com/products.php?sub=topre_keyboards,rf104&pid=xf01ts (https://elitekeyboards.com/products.php?sub=topre_keyboards,rf104&pid=xf01ts)

Imo, this is a non-issue. I just thought I would throw it out there.

Just one question. When swapping realforce purple sliders to an HHKB, are the enter and left shift keys left unswapped due to the stabilized sliders on the HHKB? I also found a picture of the barebones realforce silent:

Are those black slider modifiers just left unsilenced in the stock board?

Here is a picture of my Silent RF104U that I am going to be harvesting the purple sliders from soon. The Shift key is black and not purple, but it is still silent.

Hmm.. I wonder if the shift/enter sliders are taller than Pro2 sliders as well, and curious to know if the sliders are a different size/shape than the stabilized sliders on the HHKB left shift/enter. I am guessing that only 1u sliders will be included in the deal?

That I cannot help you on. I was going to do a 55g silenced HHKB by going the Type-S with swapped 55g RF domes but I have decided to mod a few 55g RF 87U's to silent instead with purple sliders.

I will say that a RF 87U, HHKB Pro 2, and HHKB Type-S all are 4mm travel from what I see / read. The purple sliders on the RF 104U make it a 3.8mm travel.

I think most people who want to silence a HHKB either use Hyperspheres, Landing Pads, or just go with a Type-S.

It looks like it wasn't too big of a deal putting RF purple sliders in an HHKB for this person:

His build log says nothing about the Enter and Shift key sliders, unfortunately
