Title: How come MX Nature White doesn't seem too popular?
Post by: Hyde on Mon, 01 May 2017, 20:26:51
I'm pretty sure a lot of us think MX Red is too light and MX Black is too heavy, and MX Nature White should be the perfect solution (or at least I hope so).

But how come I don't see it on too many boards yet.  Yet MX Silent Red is like literally everywhere now.

I'm eagerly waiting for a MX Nature White Filco or WASDV2 or Leopold.

Though I haven't been able to try them anywhere yet so I could be missing something.....

I don't think that many people were looking for something between stock MX blacks and reds.

Gat blacks are a bit closer to the middle ground between MX blacks and reds than nature whites are and they'll for sure be smoother, every linear MX switch needs lube (other than maybe vintage blacks).

most casual kb users are usually satisfied with a choice between reds and blacks

most enthusiast kb users will usually swap the springs of any linear mx switch to whatever non-stock weight they desire

Blacks were too heavy for me, just ordered a board with silent reds... We'll see if its too light. If so, I'll prolly go nature whites as well.

Yeah I thought about swapping springs but it's too much work.  I also use full size keyboard too sighhhh..... (more switches to desolder).

And yes I did heard that MX Nature white is not dead center between weights, it's leaning slightly towards MX Black.

Should I consider Gateron Black?  That sounds promising but did they fix the corrosion issue?  (something along the line of that)

I am typing now with Gat milky bottoms, vintage Cherry black stems, Korean 65g gold springs and transparent Gat tops. OG Cherry beige set on a XT 60 layout.

It feels awesome!

After some months with  ergo-clears and my version of Ghetto greens these things are the real ****.

Pretty content with my MX reds to the point where I haven't felt the need to try anything else.  Blacks were definitely too heavy but I haven't really had any problems with reds, particularly after coming off using the XMIT 50g hall effect board.

I think maybe for me, in terms of weight.  MX Brown hit the sweet spot, MX Red is just a tad too light (even though it shares the same spring).

My first mech had reds and while I enjoyed them they did feel a little too light for me. Got a switch tester and immediately loved the nature whites ,so I got a ducky tkl with them. I've since moved on to linear greys but think nature white is a great middle ground between red/black.

Isn't linear grey super heavy though?

Kinda like red -> nature white -> black -> linear grey?

I wouldn't call them super heavy but they're pretty heavy (80g), I use 78g lubed gat clears in my GON.

I'm actually on hybrid switch (RGB Red housing+ Linear Grey stems+85g Spirit springs) now but still use the whites on my work computer for different reasons.

Are you referring to actuation weight in both cases though?

I thought grey (both linear and tactile) were around 100g on the bottom-out, and as Korean / custom springs are usually rated at bottom-out, 78g Gat clears would be quite a bit lighter

That's true, the numbers from cherry are actuation while the numbers for Korean springs are bottom out. I was saying that I don't think linear greys are that heavy, tactile greys feel pretty heavy but they have a different force curve.

A lot of deciding how heavy a switch feels also depends on if you bottom out when you type and what weights you're used to.

Stating that I use 78g gat clears was more of a reference point than anything. I also use stock MX clears fairly often and used to love panda clears so my weight ratings will be skewed when compared to someone used to reds.

Edit: Also worth mentioning that I built a 40% with tactile greys but swapped it to clears after about 2 weeks due to the weight.

Yeah there's many variables for sure. I find I prefer different weights in different switches / types too

…and here I am with my ghost blacks that easier to actuate but harder to bottom out than stock blacks.

Reds felt a little too light for me, and I could only type 10 minutes on a black before giving it up. I tried Gateron blacks and even those were still a bit too stiff.

I eventually went with a Silent Red + 62g conversion and that was prefect. I'd be curious to try out Gateron Yellow or even Cherry MX Nature White to see how they compare.

It's interesting that people say that reds are too light from them and these "accidental keypresses". I believe it, but I don't get it. I was afraid of it too, because I also like the more heavy 55g Topre and MX Clears. But for me the balance is perfect, I can't image myself accidentally pressing keys.

Truth be  told, all Cherry switches work just fine. For any decent touch typist any of them will do pretty well. The feeling is just a side benefit, it is just a sort of luxury appreciation that a keyboard aficionado like to customize as much as possible, but nothing that could make an actual impact on touch typing performance.

Hmmmm Gateron Yellow does sounds promising now.  Maybe more so than MX Nature White.

You know it is the absolute truth. Anything else is just keyboardist parafernalia. Still, I love my mod blacks, now.

I'm extremely interested in Nature White especially after learning about the new Cherry MX stem redesign (see here https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=88031.0). People say that Cherry Black has become as smooth if not smoother than Gateron Black after the redesign. Cherry Nature White would make Gateron Black obsolete if this is the case, unless you're looking to save a bit of money on your build with Gateron.

mechanicalkeyboards.com says they asked Cherry for some Nature White switches but haven't received a response as to when they would be available loose in bulk.

The interesting is that the stem cutout isn't angled like the new stems, yet Zeal said that they are new moulds. Also, does anyone know if it's possible to purchase mx silent blacks? Or do you have to mod them yourself?
