i remember 20+ years ago, I was at the hydroelectric administrative office, and we just computers with dos , when everyone would go home, I would go to the computer station and play lode-runner..
Was addicted !!
It was soo good. Great memories, miss it. Productivity software felt also more productive.
I played most of the games. wolf3d, doom, doom2, quake, command and conquer, commander keen, crystal caves, everything apogee, etc. AWESOME

Those were much later..
After lode runner, i was on the streets for a long time, and didn't have any more access to computer dos for several years..
on the streets we had mostly nintendos and nintendo clones..
They ran the machines like at an arcade, gambling parlor, it was pay for minutes of play and casino..
I stole cigarettes and this is where i spent them.. eventually they just let me hang out because I got so good at punchout, I was able to hustle everyone betting at the time.
I pressed ESC and somehow posted in this thread. My ESC key.. why do you let me down :(

Most all of these games were MS-DOS releases. Windows (3.11) was just another application that DOS ran back then.
Until late 1996 when games were coming out to specifically run on Windows95, e.g. Diablo, they still were mostly launched from the underlying DOS command prompt.
So many great games.

Meh, you can keep your memory leaks and manually configured ram to ensure max performance.
I remember tweaking memory, fighting sound card settings, and of course, LOW RESOLUTION. You can keep it.
Taking it further we can stop playing most games, and just read the wiki- synopsis. Not only have I done that, but i also watched someone play through a game on Youtube (Deadpool).

Honestly, I think it was probably more enjoyable that way. You got all the jokes without repeating everything 20 times when you failed.

Ya'll played Raptor ?F*ck yeah I loved that game.Show Image(https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/2/2a/RaptorGameplay.png)
Ya'll played Raptor ?Played it tons. The target-seeking minigun and laser cannon are among the most awesome weapons ever put in a video game. That said, I still prefer Tyrian.Show Image(https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/2/2a/RaptorGameplay.png)
WordPerfect 5.2 for word processing, lotus 1-2-3 for spreadsheets. Enough games.
If only we could convert geekhack to BBS and implement TCP/IP in DOS, and have ethernet (RJ45) nics in DOS.
What else do we need? We don't need facebook. Twitter can be put into text mode. E-mail can be text already.
And then we need svga 9gag.exe in does... that's the only issue here.
Wikipedia and google can be text as well..

I have an IBM PS/2 box from the early 1990s (it is a 486 but I really can't remember what is inside) that I would love to sell cheap, but the thing is so heavy that shipping is probably considerably more than the selling price.
Anybody in the Atlanta area want it for $20 if you come pick it up?
I've been meaning to buy or build a DOS gaming PC. Gone as far as writing scripts so I can launch my DOS games with DOSBox via one click but it's not the same.

I've honestly gone the opposite route. I just want to run the OS and software. DOSbox or a VM running DOS is fine with me and I'd prefer DOSbox at that. Hell, even my arcade downstairs is collecting dust because Mame is easier and more reliable in most cases. I might eventually replace the board in there with a PC running Mame but it's been a low priority.
Also the Bullfrog games. Dungeon Keeper, Syndicate Wars, Magic Carpet 2, Theme ... :D

I ran TCP/IP on Ethernet (RJ45) 10mb plenty on DOS 6 / Windows For Workgroups 3.11 back in the day. The earlier days of dialup internet were on DOS/Windows back in the days of the 486 and first Pentiums.
You should be able to grab FreeDOS and run it in a VM on VMWare Player or such as well. Looks like mTCP is needed to get tcpip support. Almost tempting to fire this up for no particularly good reason. Then realize I'm in DOS, then shut it down and probably never use it again. Pretty much like I did with the mainframe emulator running MVS and the DEC Alpha running OpenVMS. I wouldn't mind getting my hands on Tru64 UNIX, though. Mostly to play with another UNIX, then similarly forget about it being installed.

Then throw that into VMWare or VirtualBox with

That's a great idea! I should try that once I have some free time on my hands.
Yes, and Populous too, but I never played those games. Bullfrog were the best in the world at the time, though. Shame Molyneux can't make a decent game to save his life nowadays xD .Also the Bullfrog games. Dungeon Keeper, Syndicate Wars, Magic Carpet 2, Theme ... :D
Wasn't theme park hospital also by bullfrog? Bullfrog games were freakin' awesome!

I wrote one of these years ago, lost the source though :(
Sometimes I think about writing another one, maybe with a vampire theme.

I actually would love to build a 486 DX 66Mhz with legacy parts from the era. But I don't know how to get all the parts together.
Only thing I can remember about those machines that I found REALLY annoying was the fans. They were always so loud.

You could probably just buy one off eBay. http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_odkw=intel+486&_osacat=11189&_from=R40&_trksid=p2045573.m570.l1313.TR5.TRC2.A0.H0.Xintel+486+compute.TRS0&_nkw=intel+486+computer&_sacat=11189
That or probably find one dirt cheap local. I went from a 486-33 to a Pentium 100Mhz. Man that was the ****, too. If you're piecing it together, 16mb of RAM was pretty huge in the 486 era of the DX2-66. Might try to find yourself a Diamond Stealth or Diamond Viper video card as well. The Viper was a beast for the time. Otherwise, honestly, most any decent dedicated card should work.
I've mostly ended up staying away from hardware because I know I won't use it. I've got a Sun Ultra 60 sitting next to my desktop PC that hasn't been powered on in years. Eventually gave up 3 SGI systems - a pair of Indys and a Challenge L.
These days, my desktop itself can handle running any of those and if I can build a new one this year, could easily run everything I wanted simultaneously. That way, it's only a bit more hard drive space I'm taking up with my mainframe, the Alpha running OpenVMS, and any other VMs or simulators I fire up to run old server or desktop operating systems. The hardware has less appeal to me... probably partly because I'm a UNIX admin that has to still deal with old stuff that should have been decommissioned years ago.
