Because you are used to seeing the over stuffed ones on farms.

Natural turkeys don't look like a Butterball, and while they can fly, it's not for long distance. Chickens too, but for an even shorter distance.

Turkey could "fly" if all Turks used LSD at the same time.  :p

The word "turkey" for a species of bird is yet another use that stems from confusion, like "New Zealand (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zeeland)", "cocoa (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theobroma_cacao)" and "America (http://americaisnotusa.com/)".

Yep. I have turkeys in my neighborhood all the time and they like to fly when cars get too close.
