I know most of you have probably heard about this but just in case not, better to be safe than sorry. I won't be going in depth but basically the NSA had their windows backdoor leaked which allows someone to execute files without you clicking anything. A group of people made a virus using this and your computer can catch this ransomware that will encrypt all your files. Please install windows new patch for this backdoor as soon as possible. You can catch this worm by being on the same network as someone with it.

Here's a Github page (https://gist.github.com/rain-1/989428fa5504f378b993ee6efbc0b168) that details what the WannaCry∕Crypt ransomware is, how it propagates, along with news and updates.

Oh yay...my work PC has decided windows update doesn't work anymore.
EDIT: So if I'm using malwarebytes premium I'm ok? Cause I am at work... :-X

Malware bytes will most likely not prevent it being a worm that doesn't need to ask permission for anything. Hospitals have already been compromised and have had to turn away patients. Just look online for a solution when you have time. It might also be that windows is being overloaded with update requests.

Do this for now. Quote from the GitHub "Kill switch: If the website www.iuqerfsodp9ifjaposdfjhgosurijfaewrwergwea.com is up the virus exits instead of infecting the host. (source: malwarebytes). This domain has been sinkholed, stopping the spread of the worm."

From what I've read it uses the EternalBlue exploit so if Windows Update isn't downloading atm disabling SMBv1 is a mitigation. See the comment here (https://www.reddit.com/r/worldnews/comments/6arkxt/hospitals_across_england_hit_by_largescale/dhhthkh). I used the PowerShell command from the Microsoft link a couple days ago rather than the one listed in the comment but they do the same thing afaik.

But now V2 has been release which ignores the domain.

Disable wifi and unplug ethernet. Crisis averted. If you're running Windows XP well, install Linux Mint.

Welp that was quick.
I guess it was too much to expect, that it stayed dead.
Still I have my Windows patched so I am not expecting problems. Unless v2 also works with the patch?

looks like they have a patch out for OSX as well.... my win10 box seems more concerned with 'updating my amd video driver' which is impossibly wrong.

Thought I would post this too. Decrypter for V1

Heh yes Linux does seem to have less issues.
I was surprised to hear that there was a Windows patch out in March for this bug. Seems they might've been a little ahead for once?

Updated my windows first time in the past year....
Did you get more than 1GB updates and about 7 reboot cycles like I did? :))
-
I installed the update, but it didn't actually run until 2 days later. Despite it saying it would run immediately after installation.
