Title: Oh god don't let this be the new trend...
Post by: elservo on Wed, 24 February 2010, 19:26:13
A keyboard without those pesky "keys" to help solve your bacteria problem. (http://gizmodo.com/5479583/evict-bacteria-with-the-cleankeys-touch-sensitive-keyboard)

Glad Gizmodo makes a point though that this will be useful at hospitals, but oh my, I couldn't imagine trying to type on that thing.

Yikes, me neither.

Just gotta disinfect those old keyboards well, like below me disinfecting the Gateway AnyKey pulled from the basement this morning.

I don't really care how dirty my keyboards are. I'm the only one who uses them anyway.

Once they're clean once, I kinda do the same.  But a used keyboard is sort of in the same class as a public telephone, quite likely nasty.  Of course items like doorknobs, toilet handles and money also fall into this category but one has to suck it up at some point or become Adrian Monk.

I would rather use a telephone to type with.

Also, if you saw my Chicony keyboard, you would probably get an infection just from looking at it.

Yeah +1 for hospitals. The nastiest keyboard I've ever used was one used by the technicians who make casts.

After one key press, I slid it straight into the garbage...
Sorry, no pics.

When I have to use a keyboard at a school or something, I don't.  I carry one of those roll-up rubber keyboards to use when I'm forced to use a computer that is not mine.  It's not the best keyboard in the world, but it's better than using some thing that a ton of people have touched.

It sounds like you are in the market for an HHKB and a carrying case.

Those cost too much.  I got the flexible keyboard for free.

Earlier today for the lulz, I visited one of my college's Mac labs. The white keys on the 'aloomanum' keyboards were practically brown with dirt. To make matters worse, the machines are less than two years old...

True. I definitely don't buy into all that 'spray everything with bleach or E-coli will rape your children' ****e, but beyond a certain level of dirtiness, it's rather disconcerting.

Things could be worse - there are people I know who recoil backwards if I put something I've pulled from a skip near them.

I'm definitely not afraid of dirt, but there are things I won't touch given the choice.  People's nasty keyboards are one of them.

Grime layered on by a large number of folks without regular cleaning or even the benefit of sunlight to clean it ain't any more natural than trying to avoid dirt altogether.  Everything in moderation.

E-coli can be unpleasant, even deadly, and should be avoided.  One can't live in a bleach soaked bubble but should take reasonable precautions if you don't want to pay the price.  I can tell you first hand that there are some antibiotic resistant strains of bacteria out there that are even worse and it can take some time and whining to convince a doctor get up on a stool and get the top shelf antibiotics required to fight them.

While it's true that younger children in particular should have some exposure to all kinds of dirt (as well as plenty of other kids) in order to build up a good, healthy immune system, I'm not so sure about the same applying to grownups.

Last time I was in a PC pool, I looked at the grimeboards and ultimately decided I didn't need a computer that urgently...

Well that's what I think is silly. I don't like a dirty board either, but I don't mind cleaning a grimeboard. Well, I mind it for the time it consumes. But not because I'm a princess ;)

My cheapness outweighs my germophobia, I'll clean up a grimeboard if it's worth it, that's what wet ones and lysol are for, :fear:

One of the worst are those grime encrusted keyboards from secretaries that use WAY too much hand cream. They feel as nasty as they look.

This looks to be pretty close (minus the burn marks), especially the space bar.

I saw him several times and was actually holding tickets for a show he was going to do in less than a month when I got the sad news that he died. I was so bummed. The last time I saw him, he didn't look like he was in the best of health and I knew that any show I saw could be the last one he did so when I bought those tickets I actually thought to myself that I hope he lives long enough to do one more show in Silicon Valley.

I laughed so damn hard at one of his shows that I injured my diaphram. I had a muscle spasm right at the same time he told a really funny joke and the laughing only made it hurt worse and worse, but I couldn't stop. I was in severe pain, but howling with laughter. It hurt for two weeks after the show.

Something else I would rather use to type with rather than that "keyless" keyboard:

They should make a new Kinesis Advantage keyboard based on rotary dial technology (with footpedal).

I saw him right before he did his last HBO special about a year or so before he died. It was a tune-up show before said HBO special, and he had just gotten out of rehab (alcohol) a few weeks earlier. He was reading some of his newer material off note cards, but it was still hilarious. The only thing he told that was a bit off was a joke about "**** donation." It was weird and off-putting. The crowd wasn't into that one too much.
