Title: Keycaps with windows for paper legends
Post by: krfkeith on Thu, 22 June 2017, 06:14:12
I'm curious if anyone still sells these. What I'm referring to are those keycaps with transparent windows, with a slit to insert paper legends, so that the keyboard can be customized. I've been experimenting with several different custom layouts, and I don't really want to commit to any particular one, so it would be useful to have this kind of customizability.

The term you are looking for is relegendable keycap.

Okay that is definitely helpful.

Second question then: are there any of these which are actually nice to type on? The profile on the ones I've been able to find looks really bad

Typically  these are made to be used on the function row or on keyboards for cash registers etc. Especially when looking at the cherry profile caps.

There are some low profile tipro relegendables if you can find them, they might not be too bad.

There are also other macro boards around but not really made for typing per se.

Also Signature Plastics has some SA relegendables not exactly sure what rows they offer but if you got an all row 3 set that wouldn't be so bad.

There was a one off  custom board someone made a while ago that used all SA relegendables and it was very nice.

EDIT: the board mentioned above

All I'm seeing are 1u relegendables. Are 1.25, 1.5 or 2u?

Another option (likely more expensive) is to have WASD print your keys. If the number of keys that end up changing end up "small" it might not be too bad to het them the way you want.
They'll print on any of their 21 different color caps.

The problem I see with these is that they have a flat profile. I guess no one really intends for relegendables to be used for the main part of the keyboard

There are some with SA profile (1x2u) available over at PimpMyKeyboard.

Multiple color choices.

They also support 1x1u relegendabes with curved tops. In this case the legends can go down all 4 sides of the key too:

Just a note -- all the 2u relegendable caps posted here look like they're meant to mount on a pair of adjacent MX-compatible switches in a matrix layout, rather than a stabilized 2u cap (eg. ANSI/ISO backspace)
