I was going to try making a wrist rest - has anyone got any idea what wood would be best? I'm new to woodworking but I have been building a bench in my spare time and thought I would try this!

A wooden wrist rest is not a structural part so you can use any kind of wood, according to your preferences on the grain.

Bamboo.
It's extremely durable, Asus used it for their laptops and they hold up really well.
If you plan on sealing and coating it, you can use anything you want, just plan on refinishing it every few years as most woods will quickly become discolored unless protected.
