Title: IBM USB spacesaver II KPH0035 - trackpoint not working - drivers required?
Post by: kousuke on Tue, 04 July 2017, 13:40:31
Hey Guys,

I'm desperate to get my hands on a USB desktop keyboard with integrated 3-button trackpoint due to RSI injury on my right wrist from repetitive mousing action

I bought two IBM USB spacesaver II KPH0035 off ebay. The first one arrived with a broken trackpoint stem - the 2nd one had missing keycaps. Not a big deal as I replaced the missing keycaps from the 1st one with broken trackpoint stem

Much to my disappointment, the trackpoint doesn't work still - when I first plug it in - the trackpoint stutter on the Y axis - but X axis movement is smooth. After rebooting my PC... it is dead. Mouse buttons doesn't work. I clarified this with the seller, he affirmed that the trackpoint was tested on a win10 laptop - and it's 100% working

I experimented with various windows 10 and win7 64bits drivers from Lenovo - I mean do I even need drivers at all? The trackpoint was detected as generic HID mouse but it just doesn't work - Am i missing something here? or the trackpoint is also broken on the 2nd keyboard?

I'd really appreciate if there are any KPH0035 who had the trackpoint working on win10

Thanks heaps

Disaimer: this does not directly answer your questions in the post, but I'm throwing out some potential alternative solutions.

Not a huge track point fan myself, but personally I have custom layouts on most or all of my daily drivers, with a tap toggle layer switch that (on most of my keyboards) turns I JKL into arrow keys, and E SDF into mouse keys (space is click, a is right click). Then I have scroll up/dn, scroll wheel up/down, home/end etc all on the qwerty row.. Wondering if you've ever considered something like that?.

If you have RSI (which I dealt with for many years), you could also consider an Ergodox or  Kinesis Advantage.  I used the Kinesis for years and it did wonders for my wrist pain. I mean, it was gone in days, after years of pain that got to the point where I couldn't hold a shopping bag. :(. If you're interested in trying it out, they are expensive and id be willing to sell my old one for a really good price because I've been there. The learning curve is kind of steep, but by week 2 I was fine. After a month I was soaring on it and didn't want to go back to a normal keyboard! To this day, I have my enter and backspace accessible by my thumbs (I have very odd layouts), and absolutely love it.

The other thing about the kinesis (or Ergodox) is you can play with different ways to use your mouse. People love placing a track pad between the key wells, I used a variety of rollermouses which was great if you needed to quickly select another box or something. And for ergonomics it's great, because you can use either hand (and I did, naturally) but I guess track point is the same.

If switch it up very regularly, but here's one example of how I used a mouse with it:

If you're set on a trackpoint and aren't attached to your current board, I have a ps2 m13 as well that I got from someone on this forum. (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170704/2ed31056a82599be851c1cd8e1f6a94f.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170704/147f1e37477c9dc0ed0bfb7b118c4a60.jpg)
