I've been too busy to be active here, but once in a while the oddball thing pops up that reminds me of how wonderful this place is and how much I need to spend more time here for my sanity's sake.
Anyways, if anyone out there has been needing to hook up a Sun 8-pin mini-din to ps2 on the cheap and easy, it seems like this little converter will do the trick. It's usual msrp seems to be almost $200, but this one is open-box at Provantage for <$20:

Enjoy!

Which Sun keyboards are worth converting? I used a couple at uni and I don't remember them being any big deal.

I was just going to ask about that. I've never used any Sun keyboards. They look quite cool, especially the unique speckly "granite" versions like this one:

I understand the Type 1 through 3 boards were mechanical, and thus preferable to the subsequent Type 4–5 (RD) boards. A lot harder to find, too—I don't think I've ever seen anything earlier than a Type 4 on eBay.
Are the RDs particularly well made, or have other interesting features? I'm sure some Sun experts are lurking here... Maybe one of them could wade in and elucidate us.

That's an SGI keyboard, not a Sun one. Or did you mean that they use the same connector?

Could use one of these : https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=78888.0

Now down to only $10.61. :thumb:

Oops, sorry, my mistake... Did Sun make a "granite" case too? Wonder where I got that idea?

I don't think anything older than Type 5's usually turn up for sale. There's currently one Type 4 on eBay (https://www.ebay.com/itm/C3-SYSTEMS-Sun-3201005-02-Keyboard-Type-4-Model-E03470014-DTC-KEYTRONICS/162772548984) for not too much:

Not an RD, but foam and foil, according to this DT thread (https://deskthority.net/photos-f62/sun-type-4-t10793.html).

Is it safe to assume the Sun optical mouse will pass through without the kb? Cause like, I really like those old Sun optical mouses. Switch the case with a mouse Systems PC mouse and BAM.
-
That's a good question. If the mouse plugged into the keyboard, then I think it's got a shot at working with this box.

Only one left in stock... Shipping was too much for me.

This thing is a little redundant unless you want to use the mouse pass through. Atleast for me, the keyboard works over ps/2, but the mouse. I suspect the two pins on the type 5 that would fit where the little piece of plastic is on a ps/2 are the pins for mouse.

Not to mention the 90% Swedish tax on everything, eh?

I always think of the Swedish chef when I think of Sweden. This is the link he uses to search for stuff in his native language of 'bork bork bork':
