Title: how many is too many :P
Post by: HotRoderX on Sat, 02 September 2017, 00:26:18
Was wondering how many is too Many simple meaning. The same board different switches. right now have a Saber and Tada and going to add a third that I built when Massdrop offers the kits hopefully soon! How many of you own duplicate boards ((same manufacture style different switches or same switches)). I am curious

I had multiple Model M's and a Model F concurrently before doing a sell-off/modification. Some boards offer slightly different experiences, even if they are outwardly very similar. Those subtle differences (having both a 45g and 55g Realforce for example) can make it worth to have multiple of the "same" board. Same goes for form factors.

The only reason I'd get two of the same boards for any lengthy period of time is to have one for home, and one for work.

When your floor collapses under the weight of them, that's too many.

I regularly cycle between 15 or so keyboards, and also loan them out to my coworkers.

Keeps it interesting. Unfortunately they have banned model M/F from the office so that takes out most of my collection.

eventually the limiting factor becomes how much space they take up. (well that and money)

As long one board is different to another, I don't see any reason to have a limit (aside from cost, storage, lack of use etc).

I got my first Mech in 2011. My second one was purchased in December 2015.

In September 2016 I found Geekhack...now I have 24 more either completed, in the build process, or on order. I ended up having to create a spreadsheet to track all of the builds, parts and ICs/GBs.

This thread makes me feel much much better about my love of keyboards. Each one is unique and special and I spend 80% of my day on a computer so might as well have something to enjoy. Also glad not crazy for wanting three Tada/Saber 68's! There just amazing boards.

Is there such a thing as too many? I don't think so. :p

if you have  n working computers in the house that are utilized,     Then it should be theoretically important to have at least n + 3 keyboards

One for backup,  one for when you need more keys, and one to backup for when you need more keys..

Amazing!

You must be one of the few people who has successfully funded your habit by finding and reselling unwanted extras.

Yes, I had to. I was incredibly poor for the vast majority of collecting it, not even getting salary for over a year. Nowadays I don't have access to recycling centres anymore, but I get a very small sum through Youtube that I can use to buy a cheap keyboard every few months or so.

Wow, this would fill up a small room.  I have 8 or 9 and I thought this was a lot.

I honestly find that if you have keyboards that you're not using, you have too many boards. I have started offloading boards I was not using. I tend to rotate mine at home once a week at the least or when a job calls for a different setup.

I have probably 5 that I use regularly, 3 that I loan out to coworkers, and 3 or 4 that are just on display in my house. All in all I have about 87 keyboards. LOL.

I'd say one or two for every computers you own is a good number. If you happen to have lets say 6 boards with 2 computers, consider trading instead of buying; you will eventually try many different things without paying them all and you have sufficient to always type on something worth.

Right now i only have a single board and 4 computers (Job computer, school laptop, gaming rig and chromebox) which means i'm in dire need of getting new stuff lmao.

Just LOL'd and almost just spit out my coffee.  :p
I stopped counting at about 25 because if my wife ever asked, I wanted to be able to truthfully shrug my shoulders and say "I don't know."

I'm sure I could put together a pile of junker model M's and Wyse terminal boards if we wanted to go for "too many"  :))

I've had 13 boards, but then realized it is getting out of hand. So I sold 3, gave away 3, loan out 1 to a friend.

Now I only have 4 that I regularly cycle and 2 that I almost never use  :))

I have 5 keyboards atm. Two are rubber domes (BTC Domes and an ergonomic board) a Model M and my TKL Zhuque with ergo clears, and a really bizarre Datacomp Alps clone board that spontaneously stopped working.
