Title: Canned Bamboo Shoots WTF

So yea, bought some bamboo shoots from the Asian market (racist) and I wanted to give these Bamboo shoots a try....they smell absolutely horrible, is that normal?

Did I just get full blown sick?? I only ate a few small pieces.

you're supposed to cook them to remove the bitterness, you didn't eat them raw did you?

Semi-raw, I probably heated them for about 3-4 minutes but super hot in the wok...

Canned bamboo shoots and bean sprouts is the worst **** in canned form, just so gooey and nasty.

Better to buy fresh or not bother at all

I literally washed my hands 4 times and I can still smell it on my hands...I'm thinking about making myself puke just to get it out of my stomach.

Canned bamboo shoots aren't as good as fresh but they shouldn't be offensive. We use them often with no problem.

Canned foods gone bad can have botulism which is horribly dangerous.

The canned type has an extra --metallic-- smell + Alkaline water smell ..

But overall it's pretty close to fresh..


Fresh is like 20x the cost of canned.. hahahaha...



If you've never had them before,  you might not be used to the smell..




What you might look for instead is  OILED bamboo shoots in the Glass jars.


It's in chili oil,  so you can just directly stir fry that , it's already oily..



But again,  it WILL smell like bamboo shoots..   




I'd say overall,  you get used to it..

I mean, hard to describe...just smelled like something you wouldn't want to eat. I don't know how anyone could enjoy this. I really hope they weren't bad or I'm in for a world of hurt. The jar looked like this:

I've had other bamboo shoots at restaurants and they never smelled like this. They were more fresh and not bad at all.

These taste horrendous to the point where I'm worried they were actually bad and now I'm suffering from some rare Thai disease that we haven't identified in the U.S. (ok went a little far at the end but you get the idea).

Reporting back. I didn't die (yet). I think these bamboo shoots just have a putrid taste that I'm not used to.

Just wanted to warn the GH community so they know what to steer away from at the Asian market.  ^-^

Get the regular versions  , or the chili oil version..

That's a good question...they might be ambidextrous (probably use Dvorak too :D)
