I want to build a TKL board from ground up and looking for a good black base, something aluminium compact looking with a nice angle a solid ‘tough’ design with maybe a retro styling. Have pre ordered the Led Zep keys so trying to match that.
Your suggestions appreciated.

I like the look of the Filco simple but elegant

You can get a used older CM Quickfire Rapid for cheap and then mod the hell out of it. It's compatible with a lot of custom cases and has a few custom controllers made for it. They are basically Filcos (same OEM) with cheaper cases and caps.
I did notice on the PCB it's a bit easy to burn or lift the pads while soldering but otherwise it's awesome.

Ok nice, that might be a good project for my first build. Wouldn’t be a as large a price point to begin with. Some of the base+pcb’s going on GB are really expensive

Yes it's ridiculous. QFR is cheaper and easier. You just have to do a lot of desoldering if you wanna swap the switches.
You do get a bunch of free switches out of it too that you could sell.
