Title: Filco 87U USB device error
Post by: trievalot on Thu, 18 March 2010, 07:04:47
my 87 filco doesnt work every morning!!!
i have to restart my notebook sometimes 2-3 times and plug in and unplug the keyboard multiple times.
the numpad and trackball work fine, but the keyboard will light up for a couple seconds (caps and scroll) and then nothing.
ive removed the USB devices and readded, and turned off power managment.
the notebook is a HP NX7400 running XP. all original software and drivers.
has anyone else had these issues?
its a bit hit and miss, but to get working, i power off, take battery out, put in, power on and boot with nothing connected. i then plug keyboard in 1st and let all drivers intall (it will find a USB keyboard if i do this) the connect numpad and trackball.
ive tried the keyboard on other peoples machines and its worked everytime except once (removed and replug fixed it)
do i have a faulty board, or POS computer???

Sounds like your computer if you don't have problems using it on another PC.  I wouldn't know where to start, though.  It could be something with the USB contoller, the ports themselves, a BIOS problem, etc.

Do you have a powered USB hub you can use for testing? If it connects through that reliably then your laptop USB ports probably can't supply enough power.

Have you tried to connect the Filco only, without trackball and numpad? Maybe three devices draw more power than your laptop's USB can handle?

Edit: I'm too slow.

one thing's for sure the issue resides with your laptop. powered usb hub seems like a good option.
