I dont' trust google for these questions.
It just tries to sell me something.. that's All google ever does...
9/10 google results are ads..
It doesn't direct you to the store immediately, but it's designed to GUILD you there EVENTUALLY..

honestly for niche stuff you'd probably do better with reddit
if you google something like minimum subwoofer size site:reddit.com
you'll probably find yourself a bunch of threads from audio/hifi subreddits with people that probably know what they're talking about
there are surely people on GH too that know what they're talking about, but you don't really have much way of knowing

Well, it's really easy to work backwards on GH to find out if the answer is from a reliable person.
On reddit it's a bit harder..

For car or home?
home..
My Yamaha is 8" and it turns up pretty good. Unless you're going to drop $$$ on an amp the Yammy with the built in amp is great for the price.
Theater or computer?
Think this is the one I have. They probably have a newer model..https://m.newegg.com/products/N82E16882115045

I have 2 ghetto andrew jones pioneer subs which are 8 inches for left and right on the pc.
But I wanted something that can go lower, and i'm reading that it has to be big.

do you want advice from a reliable person? or a knowledgeable person?

So, On reddit, what happens is, they have hitmen on all the popular forums, trying sell people stuff, and guide them towards a set of products.. This is the new age of marketing, and its effective..
For example if you ask about mice, suddenly you get a bunch of people recommending razer.. even though razer freaking sucks, and everyone knows that.
I know there are no such paid shills here, and i do believe the main geekhack crowd is --Competent--

I think that modern electronics can help to compensate for smaller size. I have a huge really nice subwoofer that I bought in the late-1980s (I think it was nicknamed "The Sledgehammer") and built into a rock-solid but heavy-as-lead cabinet. After not using it for several years I took it out of the cabinet and stored it for the time being.
It is 15" diameter with all the traditional stuff like dual voice coils (something like 2"-3") and a massive magnet (multiple pounds as I recall), non-powered for use with a traditional stereo set.
Today I have a couple of self-powered woofers that work very well but are probably no more than 8", an Altec Lansing and a Klipsch I think, that are more "theater" oriented than old-fashioned music-listening speakers. If your crossover operates at input level rather than output level, I understand that the electronics are easy and cheap with minimal distortion, and a self-powered woofer can then "do its thing" however it wants behind its low-pass filter.

I have a 12" Lava in an apartment, it's a bit much. 10" is more than enough if you place it correctly. Look up "crawling for bass" for instructions. Basically don't put it in a corner, as with most speakers.

Sorry, I can't speak to that question.
