GO FLY A KITE

Disappointed, I expected this thread to be about Fords and not tomatoes
-
Who the **** buys tomatoes anyway?
-
These days, you can sometimes actually get semi-decent tomatoes in the winter, but since they are flown in from the other side of the world, they have to be pricey.

Not everyone here is fortunate enough to waltz into recycling centers where those tasty cherry's are stashed away.

Not a fan of cherries as it happens xD .
I don't really see the point of tomatoes, they're so watery and they taste weird. I mean I like tomato soup, tomato sauces, bolognese, I use tomato puree, etc. Just not ACTUAL tomatoes.

Have you ever bitten into a true, fully ripe, heirloom tomato in a real garden, with real soil, in the summer sun?
PS - fresh ripe home-grown cantaloupes are another mystical experience altogether different from the store-bought variety

No, I'm from a city xD .
EDIT: I should mention that the Dutch are somewhat notorious for their extremely watery tomatoes which they export all over the world xD .

most tomato varieties are good, but they're picked pre-rip to prevent spoilage and crushing.

GO FLY A KITE
Put a lightweight camera on the underside of the kite.
That will help you identify which of your neighbours down below are growing tomatoes in their gardens.
Then raid them at night!

You could grow tomatoes in pots on a balcony if you have one. Best if facing south (towards the sun), of course.
My mom tends to do just that every year on her balcony in an apartment block in a suburb. Myself, I have not got farther than buying a book about growing my own food... but I might plant some come March.

Indeed. Many fruits and veggies are picked pre-ripe and then gassed with ethylene right before they are driven to the stores.
But canned/cartoned/crushed/pureed tomates don't have to. Sometimes, those are picked and processed ripe -- and they are cheap.
One thing I did in my student days was to buy a large can of imported tomato puree -- which was really cheap -- scoop it out and put in the freezer. Then chopped off a chunk with a fork each time I needed some.
But I don't buy cans any more because cans are often lined with epoxy -- which contains a carcinogen that could be released if the can has been stored too warm. But chopped tomatoes are available in cartons for cheap.
