Title: Question about O-Rings

New into mech/topre boards. Why do people spend so much on O-rings when you can get them for under a dollar from China? I ordered some or $.80 for my Realforce

Because something like this https://kbdfans.myshopify.com/collections/keyboard-part/products/topre-keyboard-silence-x-120pcs is specifically designed for topre boards.  They're very thin.  Regular o-rings of this size are thick and reduce tactility on topre boards because they  cause the switch essentially to be partially pre-pressed.  They negatively effect the feel significantly.

Also most O-rings are designed to fit over the stems of MX-compatible keycaps.

Topre silencing ring requirements are quite different.

From what I gather, I shouldn't install these $1 O-Rings.  :))

^ i installed the red ones from KBDfans on my realforce when I did the MX swap. They do quiet it down a little so i will say that they do in fact work. The problem (at least the way i've been lead to believe by reading here) is that the additional space that is added to the slider in fact pre-compresses the rubber dome and removed a good bit of the tactile bump from the key press. Which is fine if you're into linears but its not a topre thing and it feels mushy for sure.

As a solution it seems that people have added an old mounting washer from motherboards to each screw hole to literally space the sliders away from the rubber dome a little bit? I dont see how this is actually working but i'll likely be removing the o-rings when i get a chance to take everything back apart.
